Kingston basketball squads stay alive in playoffs

Both Kingston basketball teams advanced to this week’s area round of the Class 3A playoffs but took different routes to get there.

The Lady Redskins reached the regional title contestbystoppingDavis,4323, before coming up on the short end of a 67-62 verdict to fifth-ranked Anadarko.

Kingston’s boys meanwhile suffered a 43-40 loss to Marlow in the region opener butbouncedbacktoeliminate Comanche (56-41) and Lone Grove (67-45) and stay alive.

Area tournament play will start on Thursday at Ada High School with the Lady Redskins meeting Silo at 1 p.m. and the Redskins tangling with Washington at 7:30.

Girls

After a fairly tight first half against Davis in which Kingston held a 22-19 edge, it was all Lady Redskins following the break.

Coach Chad Rumer’s club reeled off a 12-2 scoring edge in the third frame and 9-2 in the fourth as they held the Lady Wolves to just four points after intermission.

Cassidy Walker paced the offensive charge for Kingston with 14 points as Taylie Wiebener contributed nine, Joley Heydon had seven and Avery Ludrick tossed in five. JaciHerndonandCarliLilley tallied three points apiece with Coby Davis adding two.

The Lady Redskins dug themselves a 25-15 first quarter hole against Anadarko and were down 38-25 at the half before staging a second half comeback.

They outscored the Lady Warriors 14-10 in the third stanza and 23-19 in the fourth sparked by the trio of Herndon, Walker and Heydon, who combined for 21 points.

That same three led the Kingstonscoringforthegame with Herndon’s 17 points, Walker’s 14 and Heydon’s 10. Ludrick finished with nine, Kate Ratzlaff had five, Davis scored four and Lilley ended with three points.

Boys

A three-point second period proved to be too much for Kingston to overcome, although the Redskins made a go of it in the final quarter.

Trailing 37-26 after three, Kingston clamped down defensively and went on a 14-6 run but could not get over the hump.

Sam Walker was the lone Redskin in double figures with 11. Hayden Seeney notched eight points, Hudson Everhart and Brock Rumer tallied seven apiece, with five fromBlaneHenryandtwoby Lander Burkhalter.

Coach Bobby McAdoo’s squad got off to a much better start in elimination gameplayagainstComanche as they built a 20-10 lead throughonequarter.Comanche pulled within 33-27 at the half before Kingston steadily pulled away over the last two stanzas.

Rumer pumped in eight during a big third period on the way to a team-best 17 points. Henry and Walker also tallied double digits with 14 and 11 points respectively. Seeney had five, Everhart and Ty Jones scored three apiece, Burkhalter tossed in two and Reid Patterson added one.

The Redskins wasted little time in taking command during the consolation title matchup, bursting to a 17-5 first quarter lead against Lone Grove and never looked back.

Kingston was up 30-14 at intermission and 53-29 through three periods.

Everhart erupted for 21 points to fuel the Redskin charge. Seeney also clipped double figures with 13.

Henry contributed nine, Walker had eight as Rumer and Burkhalter scored seven apiece.
