The Lady Redskins were not satisfied with just “playing better” after Thursday’s loss to El Reno. It took a little creativity today against the girls from Mount St. Mary.

Most of the time Coach Chad Rumer doesn’t have to worry about being at a height disadvantage. This changed for sure when he found himself without Avri Weeks. Weeks and Tyla Bohannon are both in the six foot tall range. Dana Wagnon plays as though she is. This is a pretty formidable front court. Today the shoe was on the other foot. MSM had the advantage.

In the first quarter MSM was just collapsing the lane and double teaming anyone inside. It was physical and they were controlling the boards as well. Coach Rumer countered with an all guard line. Their quickness on defense had MSM turning the ball over and they were into “chase” mode instead of running their half court offense. Add in some timely three point shooting and MSM was quickly on their heels. Presley McKnight hit two threes, Ryan Herndon had one, Kassie Bailey and Britt Henderson all hit threes. At the first buzzer the ladies had a 20 to 12 lead. After the game Rumer stated “at times the entire line up was 5’8” (Britt Henderson) and under”. This is the definition of “small ball”.

Second quarter was almost a repeat of the first. Normal, “taller” lineup, starts out and then Rumer goes small. The odd thing was MSM never countered by trying to match up with the Lady Redskins. “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” as the old saying goes. Ryan Herndon had easily her best game as a Lady Redskin. The three ball was working and she turned in another and a two point bucket to go with it. At the same time Bailey started a trend that carried her the rest of the game. Taking offensive charges. She took two hard fouls in the lane when the bigger girls from MSM were attempting to drive to the bucket. She ended the game with 5 charging fouls taken. This is surely a school record (if there is such a record). The lead at the half had grown to 36 to 24.

In the third the Lady Redskins started inside and worked their way out. T. Bohannon hadtwo, Dana Wagnon had four, K. Bohannon had two, Emi O’Steen had two and Raegan Davis had one.

Fourth quarter they really spread the offense out and everyone was getting into the box score. Henderson for 5, Bohannon T. for 2, Wagnon had 4, McKnight had 5 including another three, Herndon added four more. Game ended with a 69 to 40 victory.

The win moves the Lady Redskins into the consulation finals tomorrow (Saturday) at 1:00 p.m. against the loser of Del City and Harrah.

For the totals: Britt Henderson 16, Herndon 12, McKnight 11, Wagnon 8, Bailey 8, Bohannon K. 6, Bohannon T. 5, O’Steen had 2 free throws and Davis both had 1.
