Grapplers wrap up regular season on high note

Madill’s high school wrestling team closed the regular season with dual wins over DavisandArdmorelastweek as well as having several grapplers claim medals in the Ardmore Tournament last Saturday.

The Wildcats took eighth in the team standings of the 20-team tournament while the Lady Wildcats took home third place in the girls’ 15team field.

Both squads will have this week to prepare for regional action in quest to advance to the state tournament, which will be held at State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City for the final time. The Madill girls will be at Cache on February 17-18 with the Madill boys in regional action on February 21-22 at Weatherford.

In the dual competition, Madill battled to a 42-42 deadlock with visiting Davis before prevailing on criteria. The Wildcats then stopped Ardmore by a 59-15 count.

Winners for the Wildcats in the Davis dual were Saul Martinez, Triston Barnes, Braxton Gimenez, Jackson Harper, Colton Sandefur, Aroddy Camacho and Christian Robledo.

Victors against Ardmore included Sandefur, Ryder Ingram, Yael Corona, Nathaniel Guzman, Brylon Gibson, Barnes, Gimenez, Robledo, Tyner Roberts and Dylan Casteneda.

Madill’s top tournament placer was Barnes, who captured runner-up honors in the 120-pound division. He received a first round bye and then followed with a 17-2 technical fall and 3:15 fall win to advance to the title tilt where he lost a narrow 10-9 decision.

Robledo claimed third at 157 pounds as he posted a 3-1 overall record. The Wildcat standout drew a bye and then was a 19-2 technical fall winner ahead of a tough semifinal defeat. He rebounded with a 3:38 pin fall victory as well as a 17-1 technical fall triumph.

Sandefur checked in fourth at 126 pounds with Camacho also ending fourth at 132.

In his opener, Sandefur dropped a narrow decision but rebounded with back-toback consolation bracket fall wins in less than a minute.

Camachomeanwhiledrew a bye before sandwiching in a 22-13majordecisionand17-1 technical fall victory around a semifinal defeat.

On the girls’ side Madill tallied six individual placers, including Anglena Mendiola at 235 pounds where she cruised to fall wins in all three of her matches to claim the individual crown. Her fall triumphs came in 2:22, 2:26 and 1:57.

Runner-up placers included Allie Barthel at 100 pounds, Yatziri Flores at 170 and Mekayla Westbrook at 190.

Barthel split a pair of matches, winning a pin fall decision in 2:49 for her medal. Florespostedthreestrongfall victories in only 1:07, 42 second and 2:58 while suffering just one loss. Westbrook had a similar run at 190 pounds with three first period pin falls in only 31, 92 and 27 seconds.

Kaydence Bourland checked in fourth at 140 pounds with Andie Wallace ending in fifth place.
