Girls 3rd, boys 7th in top Texas wrestling event

It was a heavy dose of competition for the Madill wrestling teams last week withseveralstellarindividual finishes in the 53rd Annual Paul Aubrey Christmas Tournament in Carrollton, Texas.

TheLadyWildcatsclaimed third as a group in the 21team girls standings while the Wildcats were seventh on the boys side that included some of the largest programs in the state of Texas.

Leading the charge for the Madill girls were Anglena Mendiola and Madelyn Ritchie with individual weightdivisiontitles.Mekaya Westbrook was runner-up, Samantha Ortiz placed third and Hannah Pruitt took fourth in her class.

For the Wildcats, Braxton Gimenez was on the brink of an impressive run to the title at 113 pounds before settling for second place. He scored three straight first period fall victories before the technical fall defeat in the championship match.

Inthe144-poundcategory, Jackson Harper posted a 3-2 record in claiming fourth place. He recorded wins by fall, technical fall and then a 5-0 decision that got him back to the third place contest.

Brylon Gibson had a strong run at 175 pounds as he captured fourth place. The Wildcat grappler dropped his first tournament outing but rebounded with four consecutive fall triumphs ahead of a second period fall loss in the third place contest.

Madill had a strong performance in the Junior Varsity division at the tournament as well as nine different Wildcats all placed in the prestigious event.

BrydenVallesandDayton Gimenez each claimed first place honors while Dago Gonzalez, Xavier Diaz, Enrique Martinez, Xavier Quintanilla and Rodrigo Cruces all reached their individual weight division title tilts before settling for runner-up honors. Yael Corona and Steven Moreno also wrestled well to take third and fourth respectively.
