Madill senior Ashtynn Hawkins is a member of the Madill Varsity Cheer Team. She has been in cheer since she was in the seventh grade.

She also has done competitive cheer the last two years with the Oklahoma Outlaws cheer team in Ardmore, Okla. who are the 2020 NCA Champions. Along with cheer, she is a member of the Future Medical Leaders of America and has also participated in track, cross country, and ice skating.

Hawkins said that being a cheerleader in high school has been a great experience for her. She was selected as a 2020 All American Cheerleader last year at camp. She said she has received important life lessons like confidence and kept herself involved in school activities.

Hawkins said her coaches have been beacons to keep her on the path to her goals. “My coaches have helped me stay positive and continue to work hard,” she said.

Cheer coach Kyla Selvy expressed her admiration for Hawkins and said appreciates the student athlete’s hard work.

“She is sweet, kind hearted, and she is a hard worker,” Selvy said. “It has been a pleasure to coach Ashtynn this year because she is always smiling. She has made my job easy this year.”

Selvynoted that her amazing gymnastic abilities is what helps Hawkins in cheer. “She excels at cheer because she can tumble, and she has amazing jumps,” Selvy said.

Cheerleading and tumbling require a tremendous amount of strength. Being able to tumble well is a great ability to have, especially in cheerleading. While tumbling isn’t a must for every squad, it certainly helps with the “wow” factor in impressing the crowds, which Hawkins never fails to do.

When she graduates in May 2021, Hawkins said wants to attend college at Texas Tech and has plans to become a pediatric surgeon. She has big dreams and plans for her life and wanted to thank her main supporters. “I’d like to thank my family for always being there for me and pushing me to my full potential,” she said.
