Senior James Valadez set a new school record with a gold medal winning performance in the 1600 meters and Yadira Barbosa continued her dominance in the girls’ long distance events in the Purcell Invitational Track Meet last week.
Valadez led the charge for the Wildcats as he claimed the one mile crown with a personal best time of 4:49.23. He was also part of the foursome that included Jose Campos, Ryder Douglas and Jagger Rogers that captured the event’s 3200-meter relay title with a time of 9:00.43.
Barbosa cruised to a 1600-meter triumph by clocking a 5:49.13 and also rolled to the 3200-meter title with a time of 12:19.47.
The Lady Wildcats also picked a pair of placing efforts from junior Nene Stumblingbear as she took sixth in both the 200 meters (28.18 seconds) and 400 meters (1:07.57).
Zeplyn Thomas posted a 13.12 mark in the 100-meter dash to take home fifth place while Karmony Pearson added a sixth in thelong jump at 13 feet, 6 ½ inches.
On the boys’ side, a duo of Wildcats placed in the 200 meters as Jaxon Diaz checked in third in 23.66 seconds and Jose Menchaca was sixth at 23.8. Another pair notched placing performances in the discus with Gilberto Grimaldo posting a third-place toss of 125 feet, one-quarter inches while Aroddy Camacho was fourth at 122 feet, 1 inch.
Madill had strong efforts in the 800 relay at mile relay as well with the 800 unit of Jose Menchaca, Camacho, Diaz and Joaquin Menchaca clocking in at 1:39.40 for fifth place. Camacho, Jose Menchaca and Diaz were joined by Douglas on the mile relay unit that finished fourth in 3:46.49.
