Both Redskin teams faced Hugo on January 23, 2021. The Lady Redskins were in the Consolation finals. This game should remain on the minds off the Lady Redskins for some time, along with Coach Chad Rumer. It was an uphill battle all night. Ladies prevailed and took the trophy with the final score of 50 to 49.
The lineup for Coach Rumer stayed the same as it has since Ryan Herndon was quarantined. Avri Weeks, Emi O’Steen, Kamry Bohannon, Raegan Davis and Kiara Price. In the first quarter, it was evident that Weeks had a battle on her hands. She managed to get two buckets and went to the line and was 5 of 6. Bohannon split the defense and drove underneath for two buckets as well. Kaya Weibner managed to go 2 of 2 from the line. After one quarter, the Lady Redskins were trailing by five points, 16 to 11.
The second quarter did not show to be much better. Weeks was held without a field oal. Bohannon got thru the defense for two more goals. Weibner came in to hit two three-pointers and had a field goal. This saved what would have been a disastrous quarter. The Lady Redskins were hanging on by a thread, trailing 31 to 23.
In the locker room, Coach Rumer must have encouraged O’Steen to look for her shot, and that she did. She tallied three three-pointers and a two-point goal for an 11-point quarter. That was the burst they needed. Weeks and Bohannon each had a bucket. The lead was now down to seven, 45 to 38.
The fourth quarter was worth the price of admission alone. At the 6:40 mark, the lead was cut to three. The Lady Buffaloes were ahead 45 to 42. Jump ahead to 47.5 seconds left in the game, the score now was 49 to 46. Little did the Lady Buffalos know but they had had scored their last points. It was a three point deficit. With 27.5 seconds to go the Lady Redskins were down by a single point, 49 to 48. With 8.1 seconds left, the Lad Red-skins found Weeks and she took the ball the length of the court and laid it in. It was the first time the Lady Redskins had the lead in the entire game. The final score was, 50 to 49. Weeks in the quarter, had three field goals and was 2 of 2 from the line. O’Steen added a field goal as did Bohannon. The Lady Redsins won the Consolation trophy.
Box Score: Weeks lead all scorers with 17 points. She was 5 of 8 from the line. Next was O’Steen with 13 points. Weibner and Bohannon were in double figures with 10 points each. The team was 5 of 10 from the line for 50 %.
Following the trophy presentation, Weeks and O’Steen, were named to the All-Tournament team. Congrats to them both and to Coach Rumer and all the Lady Redskins.
