It was mission accomplished in Week 1 for the Kingston Redskin football team as they passed their first real test of an early gauntlet impressively with a 48-28 victory at perennial playoff contender Stigler.
The Redskins’ reloaded offense showed tremendous flashes while piling up 440 total yards on 46 offensive snaps.
“Ithoughtweplayedreally well,” head coach Brad Hill stated. “We were efficient offensively and played physically on defense. We even got a TD in the kicking game. We’ve been practicing for a long time, and the kids were ready to play.
“Stigler is a good football team. We knew their size would be a challenge and that they would test us in the passing game. We have a lot of things we have to fix but felt good about the way we played for the first game. Our line stood up to Stigler’s size advantage and gave us good holes to run through on offense.”
It didn’t take new quarterback Ethan Mowles long to make his mark, racing 45 yards almost untouched to paydirt on the opening Kingston possession of the night. A Landon Burgess extra point made it 7-0 less than two minutes into the contest.
Stigler knotted the score midway through the first with a touchdown pass but the Redskins were back in front just 12 seconds later afterJaksynMartinreturned the kickoff 80 yards for the score.
Mowles added a pair of second quarter touchdown passes to Kayden Fenwick that covered 29 and 27 yards, the second of which was set upbyaDamienAlmosfumble recovery. That pushed it to a comfortable 27-7 edge at intermission.
The two teams traded scores over the final two periods with Aiden Polk getting in on the offensive flurry with a 46-yard burst to the end zone. Mowles chipped in another 22-yard scamper to paydirt and finished off the scoring with a third touchdown pass that went to Almos and wrapped it up with 3:39 to play.
Mowles was eight of 15 through the air for 109 yards and the three touchdowns in addition to adding a teamhigh 155 yards on 10 rushing totes.
Polk had eight carries for 120 yards with Kelly Gray tacking on four for 17. Almos had three receptions for 17 yards while Fenwick posted the two touchdown grabs for 56 yards. Martin, Polk and Ty Jones added one reception apiece.
NextupfortheRedskinsis a true Red River Shootout as they will host Hooks, Texas at 7 p.m. Friday for the first meeting in school history.
The Hornets have been putting up video game type numbers through their first two games, which included a wild 89-49 win over Mineola and narrow 43-42 loss to Shelbyville last Friday.
“They are AVERAGING 65 points per game, which tells you something right there,” Hill added. “They are a very explosive team with all kinds of speed and weapons. They have a dynamic quarterback and running back that are both college recruits. They are dangerous everywhere. We are going to have to tackle in space and contain their quarterback as much as possible. Offensively, we are going to have to match their scoring. Last week we were challenged by Stigler’s size. This week it’s Hooks’ speed.
“We have teams in our district this year that are powerful and some that are athletic so hopefully these games have us prepared for when that time comes around.”
