Charles “Chuck” Earl Sykes, 80, of Denton, Texas, passed away on August 25, 2026.
Chuck was born on February 15, 1946, in Madill, Okla. Although he later made his home in Denton, Texas, Madill remained an important part of his life and his story.
Chuck had a gift for music from the very beginning. As a young child, he was a piano prodigy and music remained a lifelong passion. He especially loved hymns and Southern Gospel music and enjoyed creating his own arrangements of the songs he loved. Throughout his life, he shared that gift with others by playing for churches and supporting numerous church music departments. For Chuck, music was never just something he played, it was something he loved and something he loved sharing.
Chuck also had a remarkable career in business. He had a talent for walking into difficult situations and finding a way to make things work. Through his work in business and manufacturing, he became known for turning around manufacturing plants that were in trouble.
His experience eventually led to another unique chapter in his career. Chuck was appointed by the bankruptcy court to serve as a trustee for manufacturing plants that were struggling or in bankruptcy. In that role, he worked to manage and turn around troubled operations, putting his business knowledge and problem-solving skills to work when they were needed most.
Chuck also spent time sharing his knowledge about mortgages with people across the Dallas Fort Worth area. He appeared on the Marty Griffin Show on Saturdays, where he talked about different types of mortgages, answered questions from callers and helped people better understand the process of financing a home.
His love for his hometown also led him into public service. Chuck served as Mayor of Madill, Okla. in 1997 and 1998, giving back to the community where he was born and where so much of his life began.
Chuck lived a life that was anything but ordinary. He was a musician, businessman, public servant, problem solver, and, most importantly, a father and grandfather. He leaves behind a life filled with music, work, service and memories that will continue to be shared by the people who knew and loved him.
Chuck is survived by his son, Derrick Sykes and wife Katee; and granddaughter, Stella.
A celebration of Chuck’s life will be held in Madill, Okla., on November 7, 2026. Further details about the time and location will be announced as they become available.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to The Beethoven Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing music lessons and instruments to financially disadvantaged individuals with exceptional musical talent.
