Mendiola places third in state wrestling

Madill sophomore Anglena Mendiola became a twotime state wrestling placer last weekend, taking home third at the State Wrestling Championships at OG&E Coliseum in Oklahoma City.

Mendiola scored three fall victories with only one loss in four matches in the 235-pound girls division to spur the Lady Wildcats to an 18th place finish out of 57 total teams.

She dispatched Melania Nenaikita of McLoud in just 61 seconds of her opening match and followed with a 2:23 pin fall triumph against Comanche’s Mya Padilla. Mendiola then was on the short end of a 3:19 fall defeat to Abigail Lacy from Oologah but bounced back to stop Hilldale’s Mikyla White for a 2:23 pin fall in claiming third.

Senior Madelyn Ritchie ended with a 1-2 record at 190 pounds, capturing the victory with a 5:13 fall over JazielynWhitfieldofMcLoud ahead of a 4-0 decision loss to Brook West from Comanche as well as a 5:25 fall setback to Perkins’ Karissa Jones.

She wrapped up a sensational career with an individual record of 107 wins and just 29 losses, qualifying for the state tournament three times while placing once.

The Lady Wildcat duo of Mekayla Westbrook and Kaydence Bourland each competed in the state event but weren’t able to come out with any victories despite wrestling very hard throughout the event.

On the boys’ side, Madill’s lone state qualifier Alex Sarabia was unable to compete due to an injury and wrapped up the season with a solid 18-13 record.
