The Madill Lady Wildcats captured the Class 4A regional championship last week and moved within one victory of their first ever trip to the state tournament.
A 61-34 victory over Lone Grovewasfollowedbya56-38 dispatchingofArdmoreinthe title tilt as they improved to 25-1 on the year.
Coach William Bencoma’s boys unit saw their season come to an end however, despite a solid regionalopening 70-62 triumph over PaulsValleybeforetheywere bounced by Ardmore, 89-42.
The Lady Wildcats are slated to meet Oklahoma City Douglass in the area championship game at 6 p.m. Friday at East Central University needing just one win to advance to state.
Girls
An 18-3 flurry in the first stanza against Lone Grove put Madill comfortably in front from the start and they never looked back from there. The Lady Wildcats extended the advantage to 34-12 at halftime and 50-26 through three periods.
Luci Douglas took high scoring honors with 16 points while Elexis Holmes and Arlette Andrade hit double figures with 11 apiece.
E’Niyah Holmes contributed eight, Ireland Groeber had six, Chloe Miller tossed in four, La’Miyah Brown notched three and Karma Williams rounded things out with two.
The title tilt against Ardmore was a nip-and-tuck affair through most of the first three quarters although the Lady Wildcats held a narrow lead during each stanza.
Douglas tossed in six in the opening frame to help stake Madill to an 18-14 lead and both teams tallied nine in the second quarter. Coach Eric Holmes’ unit added a 13-10 edge in the third period with Brownpumpinginfiveforthe balanced attack.
Thefourthstanzabelonged to Madill as the hosts pulled away with Elexis Holmes pouring in seven in a 16-5 burst with the Lady Wildcats sealing it with an eight for eight performance at the charity stripe.
Four Lady Wildcats posted double figures with nearly a fifth. Elexis Holmes and Douglas scored 13 each, E’Niyah Holmes had 12 and Brown posted 10. Andrade ended with eight points.
Boys
A terrific showing by the Wildcats staved off elimination against Pauls Valley as they scorched the nets for 10 three pointers.
Sammy Duran pumped in eightandRyanAndersonhad six in the opening period to spur Madill to a 14-7 advantage. Anderson canned two more treys with Cash Cooper and Duran adding one apiece asthelead increased to 28-16.
Pauls Valley narrowed the margin to 10 at the end of three periods and both teams caught fire in the fourth as Madill was able to hold off the Panthers with a 16 for 23performanceatthecharity stripe in the final quarter.
Duran drained three treys on the way to a team-high 25 points while Anderson sank four threes en route to 23. Jagger Rogers pumped in 16 as Cash Cooper added six and Christian Smith had one point.
The Wildcats were unable to withstand the relentless defensive pressure of Ardmore as the Tigers cashed in a 30-4 first quarter scoring splurge and then outscored Madill 33-4 in the third period.
Duran was the lone Madill player in double digits with 12 points as Anderson tossed in eight. Cooper had five, Teagan Groeber and Brayden Jowers pitched in four apiece, Smith scored three with Gilberto Grimaldo and Andrew Ramon contributing two each.
