In a battle of Top 10 ranked girls’ squads last week, Madill got a huge fourth quarter and overtime performance from freshman Elexis Holmes to slip past Kingston, 60-53, in the first of two meetings this season betweentheMarshallCounty rivals.
The Class 4A 10th-ranked Lady Wildcats trailed 35-29 afterthreeperiodbutHolmes poured in 19 of Madill’s 31 points down the stretch, single handedly outscoring the Lady Redskins over the final 12 minutes.
In the boys’ outing, Kingston scorched the nets for nine three pointers, taking control early on the way to a 65-46 decision which leveled the Redskins’ record at 3-3 going into the Christmas break.
The teams are scheduled to square off again January 17 at Kingston.
Girls
Kingston had held the dangerous Holmes to only five points through the first three stanzas, but the sixfoot stalwart erupted for 13 points in the fourth frame alone as the hosts notched a 19-13 scoring edge to force the extra frame.
Holmes added six more points in overtime and La’Miyah Brown chipped in four key free throws as Kingston could only post five points, all of which came from Joley Heydon.
The Lady Redskins utilized a well-balanced assault in claiming a 14-9 edge through one frame and extended the margin with a 14-10 flurry in the second, spurred by Jaci Herndon’s seven.
After being down 28-19 at intermission, Madill narrowed the gap with a 10-7 third quarter edge to draw within striking distance.
Three players tallied double figures apiece for both squads in the tight contest with Holmes leading all scorers with24pointsinthegame for 10th ranked Madill as they moved to 5-1 on the year.
Luci Douglas contributed 11 with Brown finishing with 10 points. Junior E’Niyah Holmes made her season debut while posting nine points. Karma Williams chipped in four and Ireland Groeber had two.
Class 3A’s eighth-rated Kingston, which slipped to 4-2, was fueled by Heydon, who had only four points in the first three frames but wrapped up with a teamhigh 13.
Herndon and Cassidy Walker tossed in 12 each. Avery Ludrick posted eight, Taylie Wiebener canned a pair of treys on the way to six points with Carli Lilley and Kate Ratzlaff each pitching in one.
Boys
The Redskins got their transition game going from thestartandracedtoadouble digit lead before steadily pulling away over the final three periods.
Brock Rumer pumped in eightandSamWalkerhadsix points in the opening flurry as Kingston built a 21-11 in the first eight minutes. Jagger Rogers was the offensive bright spot for the Wildcats with a pair of first quarter treys.
Sammy Duran contributed a conventional three-point play as well as three pointer in period two for Madill, but wasn’t enough to completely offset a 14-point frame by the visitors that moved the Kingston edge to 35-21 at intermission.
Blane Henry caught fire inside during the third stanza, pumping in eight points, to help hold the Wildcats at bay and it was Hayden Seeney that provided the finishing touches by tallying eight in the fourth quarter alone.
Rumer sank four three pointers and notched a gamehigh 19 points for Kingston. Two others reached double digits with Henry accounting for 13 and Seeney 12.
Walker added eight and Reid Patterson nailed a pair of the Redskins’ nine three pointers to toss in six points. Lander Burkhalter scored five and Hudson Everhart had two.
Duran was the only Wildcat in double figures with 11 points, but Rogers and Ryan Anderson were just below that threshold with nine apiece. Cash Cooper contributed seven points, Gilberto Grimaldo had six and Teagan Groeber ended with two.
