Sports are an important part of children's lives. The President'sCouncilonSports, Fitness & Nutrition Science Board says participating in sports is associated with lower rates of anxiety and depression, lower amounts of stress, higher self-esteem and confidence, and reduced risk of suicide, among other health benefits. Being part of a team and enjoying social interaction has its own perks as well. All are good reasons to join youth sports.
The winter scholastic sports schedule offers a number of possibilities. The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association indicates that these sports are often offered in the winter. Various states as well as provinces and schools may offer different sports for the winter season.
· Basketball: Both boys and girls basketball is offered in the winter. Skills on the court are tested as teams face one another.
· Bowling: Schools may have bowling teams that compete in the winter season. Bowling might be an athletic activity that appeals to many as, although teams compete, it's about improving personal skill for top scores.
· Swimming/diving: Even though winter may not seem liketheseasonforswimming, this is when many scholastic organizations schedule swimmingforyoungathletes. Swimming is an activity that works the entire body, and diving tests specific form and skills.
· Ice hockey: The action on the ice heats up even though the temperature is cold. Ice hockey is a fitting sport for the winter season.
· Indoor track & field: Thanks to indoor tracks, track and field competitors can enjoy the sport even when it is cold outside. Track athletes participate in various events, increasing the chances that athletes with various interests will find something for them.
· Wrestling: Competition on the wrestling mat occurs during the winter season.
· Fencing: Fencing has been practiced for centuries and sword fighting with foil, epee or sabre may be used depending on the program.
· Competitive spirit: While the sport of cheerleading tends to be year-round, competitive spirit cheerleading takes place in some areas in the winter.
Students have many options when it comes to winter sports. Now is the time to get involved, but student athletes should know that tryouts or submission of athletic exampaperworkmaybe done in the fall.
