When predators are prey

While the American alligator has made an impressive recovery across much of the southern United States, wildlife experts say Oklahoma’s small but stable population continues to face unique challenges that begin long before the reptiles reach adulthood.

Among the biggest threats are hungry raccoons and the state’s unpredictable winter weather. American alligators are found naturally in the southeastern corner of Oklahoma, primarily in wetlands, marshes and slowmoving waterways within McCurtain County. The state’s population represents the northwestern edge of the species’naturalrange,making survival more difficult than in neighboring Louisiana, Texas and Florida, where warmer climates provide a longer growing season.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, female alligators build large nests from vegetation during the summer and typically lay between 20 and 50 eggs. The decomposing plant material helps keep the eggs warm while they incubate for roughly two months.

Duringthattime,however, the nests become attractive targetsforraccoons.Raccoons are considered one of the leading predators of alligator eggs.

With their keen sense of smell and dexterous front paws, they can locate nests hidden beneath vegetation and dig into them, often consuming an entire clutch before the eggs have a chance to hatch.

Otherpredators,including opossums, skunks and coyotes, may also raid nests but raccoons account for much of the egg loss in Oklahoma’s wetlands.

Even if hatchlings successfully emerge, survival remains difficult. Young alligatorsmeasureonlyabout eight inches long at birth and quickly become prey for raccoons, large fish, wading birds, snakes and even larger alligators.

Wildlifebiologistsestimate that only a small percentage of hatchlings survive long enough to reach adulthood.

Weather presents another obstacle.Oklahoma’swinters are far harsher than those experienced by alligators farther south.

Adult alligators have developed remarkable adaptations to survive freezing temperatures. During extended cold spells, they enter a dormant state known as brumation, slowingtheirmetabolismand remaining nearly motionless in ponds. When ice forms, they often hold the tips of theirsnoutsabovethesurface before the water freezes, allowing them to continue breathing while waiting for warmer temperatures.

Young alligators are far less resilient. Severe or prolonged freezes can kill hatchlings and juveniles that have not yet developed sufficient body size or fat reserves to withstand extended cold.

Successive years of harsh winters can significantly reduce the number of young alligators entering the breeding population. Biologists say the combinationofnestpredation and winter mortality is one reason Oklahoma’s alligator population grows much more slowly than populations farther south.

Despite those challenges, surveys indicate the state’s alligator numbers have remained relatively stable for decades thanks to protected habitat, conservation efforts and the resilience of adult breeding animals. The American alligator was once listed as an endangered species after decades of overhunting dramatically reduced populations throughout the Southeast.

Conservation programs, hunting regulations and habitat protection helped the species rebound, leading to its removal from the federal endangered species list in 1987. Today, the alligator is considered one of America’s greatestwildlifeconservation success stories.

For residents of southern Oklahoma, wildlife officials remind the public that alligators are generally shy and avoid human contact. They encourage people not to feed alligators, to keep pets away from the water’s edge in areas where alligators are known to live and to report nuisance animals to wildlife authorities rather than attempting to handle them.

Although raccoons and winter freezes continue to claim countless eggs and hatchlings each year, Oklahoma’s alligators have persisted along the state’s southern wetlands for generations. Their continued survival depends on healthy wetland habitats, successful nesting seasons and enough young alligators making it through nature’s many hazards to become the next generationofbreedingadults.
