Getting laid off from a job is one of the most nerve-wracking things that can happen to a person, especially if they have been at that job for a period of time. According to surveys, the average time an employee spends at one job is 4.6 years.

Considering it only takes approximately two months for something routine to become a habit, leaving a job can be stressful.

With the Landmark to Simmons Bank transition leaving so many jobs in limbo, The Madill Record decided to find tips to assist in the passage from one job to another.

According to Business Insider, there are multiple things a person can do to make a smoother adjustment to the new job.

First and foremost, stay positive. Even though the new step will be stressful, keep a positive attitude. According to the website, “showcasing your enthusiasm will likely draw in your co-workers and make initial interactions a bit smoother.”

It is also important to find a routine. As creatures of habit, it is extremely scary when our routines are altered. Be sure to find a routine as soon as possible, to where the new job is no longer new, it is a habit.

Become immersed in the company culture. Try to make the office norms as much as part of the routine as possible.

Setting goals and building relationships is also an important aspect of transitioning into the new job or position. When an employee sets goals, it shifts the focus from being the new kid in town, to attaining the goals and before they know it, they are no longer the fresh meat in the department.

Building relationships also assists in shedding the newbie skin and making them an integral part of the team. Be sure to participate in business activities as much as possible without taking away from personal duties.

Another way for a new employee to transition into the new role is to find a mentor. A seasoned employee is typically happy to take the new one under their wing and show them the ropes.

It is important to remember that even though changing jobs is scary at any age, there are ways to make it a success.
