On May 24, 2022, Robb Elementary School experienced one of the deadliest school shootings to occur in the US. An 18-year-old male entered the school and opened fire, and 19 kids and two teachers tragically lost their lives that day.

A police officer and 15 children were also injured during this horrifying event. This event is on the minds of children, parents, grandparents, and everyone across the nation. Brian Brister, Kingston Public Schools Superintendent, said he felt horrible for the families that had to experience this tragedy.

“It’s a shame we live in a world where an individual could be so cruel and deranged to do that,” Brister said.

Brister said he wants KPS to be as safe as possible for the kids and the district has protocols in place for their safety.

“We have a full-time officer on duty during school hours, as well as a keyless entry system that can lock all exterior and interior doors in the event of an emergency,” Brister said.

KPS also has security cameras covering all campuses and “Bolo” sticks that help reinforce the classroom doors. Brister said he encourages students and families to notify them about any suspicious activities.

“If students and/or parents hear about something suspicious, please report it to KPS. Whether it was something in person or seen on social media.”
