Memories and Musings: Simpler times

Our life was simple in the 50's. We lived in a four-room house.Mygrandmotherlived with us.

My brother and I shared a bedroom with mother and daddy. My grandmother's bed was in the living room/ dining room.

We had a small bathroom that we all shared. The kitchen was very small but the memories of it linger in my mind.

Mother and I washed dishes while singing America the Beautiful together. Those memoriescometomindevery time I hear that song.

We had chickens in the backyard. My daddy would wring their necks and my grandmotherwouldboilthem in that small kitchen.

I can still smell the feathers as she plucked them. I am not sure Tyson Chicken was around them; even if they were we wouldn't have purchased their chicken.

We had a small chicken house in the backyard past the clothesline and swing set. After we quit raising chickens, my brother and I turnedthechickenhouseinto a clubhouse.

Our club ended when we decided to light candles in the clubhouse. I don't think I need to share any more details about that. You probably could refer to an old Our Gang episode to compare details.

We had a Crepe Myrtle bush in the backyard which held nice switches for spankings from my grandmother. I am ashamed of it now, but she would chase us around the bush to give us swats.

Daddy would take my brother a couple of blocks away into some woods for hunting for rabbits with a pellet gun. The trip was cut short when my brother fell into some cactus and I witnessed Daddy pulling the thorns out of his butt.

I wound up hurting myself, like my brother. I chose to swing so high in my swing withmyheadbackthatwhen I came down my face dragged in the dirt below.

Like other kids in the 50's, we loved lying down on quilts in the evenings and imagining all of the different shapes in the clouds. We also liked running through the sprinklers after the lawn was mowed by a push mower with blades.

We would also sit outside the living room window drinking ice water from glass coke bottles. Sometimes, we would drink cold water from cups that had a jaw breaker candy in it so we could watch the cold water turn colors. We also didn't have an air conditioner.

Life was simple back then and we loved it.
