Local man pawned freedom for trinkets

In the August 29 issue of The Madill Record, it was reported that Stephen Gilbert, a 31-year-old male from Madill assaulted Cory Jones. Jones is the co-owner of Jones Pawn Shop in Madill and met the wrong end of a boat oar on August 21.

Gilbert was attempting to pawn a few menial items and Jones refused to take them. The items were not worth anything at all, much less the money Gilbert was requesting.

When Jones said no, Gilbert threatened him. He proceeded to leave the shop and return with a boat oar and hit Jones several times with it. The police report stated Gilbert hit Jones at least nine times in the head and upper torso.

Gilbert was arrested for Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon. On October 30, Gilbert pled guilty to the charge. He was subsequently sentenced to ten years, with all but two years suspended.

The suspect was turned over to the Marshall County Jail to being his sentence.

Once he is released from prison, Gilbert must start paying court fees and restitution in total amount of $6402.25.
