A woman from Durant, later identified as Holly Kelly, was arrested on March 31 after a tip led officials to a stolen car. On Tuesday, Marshall County Sheriff Danny Cryer was contacted by an anonymous tip about a stolen vehicle that was in Marshall County. Cryer said the tipster was able to give him the license tag number, and Bryan County verified that the vehicle was reported stolen on March 27.

The anonymous tipster informed Cryer that the car was possibly headed from the Powell area toward Kingston. Loaded with this information, Cryer and Under-Sheriff Damon Robinson were able to locate the vehicle parked at the Circle G convenience store at the Highway 32 and Enos Road intersection.

Cryer and Robinson approached the vehicle, but only found a male sitting in the passenger seat; the driver’s seat was empty. Assuming the driver was in the convenience store, Cryer headed that way while Robinson spoke with the passenger.

Cryer said that just when he was approaching the door, he had just encountered a lady exiting the store.

“As the lady raised her head and noticed me walking toward her, she quickly did an about face and started to dart back into the store,” Cryer said.

Cryer instructed Kelly to stop, and go back to the vehicle. Apparently, Kelly wanted to assert her innocence immediately, because according to Cryer, “she turned and blurted out, I did not steal that car, and it’s not stolen.”

Cryer then placed Kelly into handcuffs, and Cryer noted that as soon as the handcuffs latched, Kelly began pleading with Cryer to allow her to go to the restroom. As luck would have it, Deputy Anna Gerard had just arrived on scene. Cryer had Gerard assist Kelly to the restroom in the store.

Once Kelly finished, and was placed in the rear of Gerard’s patrol unit, Kelly allegedly fell ill rather quickly. According to the report, Kelly was claiming to have blood sugar issues and felt a seizure about to happen to her.

Cryer called EMS and Kelly was transported to a Durant hospital to be checked out. She was treated and approved for confinement. Kelly was then transported back to the Marshall County Jail, where she will be facing a charge of Possession of a Stolen Vehicle.

Cryer said the vehicle was recovered because a Marshall County resident was paying attention and called to report suspicious activity.

“Thank you, Marshall County citizen,” Cryer said, and issued a warning to any would-be criminals. “With people staying at home due to the COVID-19, more people are watching their neighborhoods and reporting criminal activity. It’s only a matter of time until you get caught.”
