Wrestling coach to be inducted into Hall of Fame

A local wrestling coach will get to add an amazing accolade to his resume. Dan Pettigrew will be honored by being inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Oklahoma Chapter.

Pettigrew is a name synonymous with wrestling excellence in Oklahoma, having dedicated nearly four decades to shaping the sport at various levels. Known for his unwaveringcommitmentand exceptional coaching skills, he has left an indelible mark on the wrestling programs at Lexington, Madill and Ada.

Pettigrew began his head coaching career at Lexington from 1984 to 1986, laying the groundwork for a successful coaching journey that would set the tone for his future endeavors. Followinghistenure at Lexington, he transitioned to Madill from 1986 to 1991, and later to Ada from 1991 to 2002. His leadership during theseyearsearnedhimrecognition as a formidable figure in the wrestling community.

Under Pettigrew’s guidance, his teams made significant strides in the competitive landscape of high school wrestling. His coaching record includes four dual state appearances, with a notable semi-finals appearance.

He was recognized as a three-time Region Coach of the Year and was named the 1999 Large East All-State Coach. His mentorship led to eight All-Staters and 15 state placers, including six state runner-ups and three state champions.

His multiple accolades as the Midwestern Conference Coach of the Year showcase his profound impact within the conference.

Pettigrew’s coaching philosophy emphasizes not just winning,butdevelopingwellrounded athletes who excel both on and off the mat. His ability to inspire and motivate has been a cornerstone of his coaching style, creating an environment where athletes thrive.

Since stepping down as headcoachin2002,Pettigrew hasremainedavitalpresence in the wrestling community as an assistant coach at Ada and Madill. At Ada, he has taken on the role of head junior high coach, focusing on rebuilding the program and nurturing young talent.

His efforts have led to the resurgence of Ada’s wrestling program,culminatinginmultiple state placers, including two state runner-ups whom he coached through their junior high years.

At Madill, Pettigrew continues to provide invaluable supportasanassistantcoach, helping the program thrive and reach new heights. Notably, he played a significant role in the team achieving its first-ever girl state placers, marking a historic milestone for the program and opening doors for future female wrestlers.

In recognition of his lifelong dedication to the sport, Pettigrew has been selected as an honoree for the National WrestlingHallofFame Oklahoma Chapter for Lifetime Service to Wrestling. This prestigious honor will be celebrated at the induction banquet on October 5, 2025, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Edmond, Oklahoma.
