Wildcats outlast Pirates to keep win streak alive

In a battle of teams with fivegame win streaks to protect, it was the Madill Wildcats who kept theirs alive with a win over the visiting Byng Pirates on Feb. 11.

Byng came into game with a 15-6 record and ranked #19 in latest poll.

Madill’s Wyate Gray found teammate Aron Vann for the opening corner three with 6:35 to go in first. Byng’s Cale Eaton answered with a three of his own to tie the score.

Vann’s second three was short and the ball went back to the visitors. Parker Presly made a deep two to give Byng the 5-3 lead.

Fajardo is first off the bench taking the place of Vann.

Maxey runs the point on senior night.

Gray misses a three on the next possession as we reach four-mnute mark of the first.

Wildcats start with a slow shooting night before Maxy makes a three to give Madill a narrow 6-5 advantage. 24 O’Grady makes a three to give Byng an 8-6 advantage.

A move by Ortega opened space inside for Maxey to put in a floater and knot the game at 8-8.

Duran came in for Fajardo with 1:49 to go. The senior guard immediately posted into corner. After multiple passes and a pair of misses, Robertson drove inside to score and give the hosts a 10-8 lead to loud cheers.

Austin Doepke was fouled and went to line for two shots. He missed both. However, Seth Brecheen got the offenseive board and scored on a putback to tie the game at 10-10.

Fuentes came on for Maxey in between the free throws.

The Wildcats got the ball back with 32.6 seconds to go in the first quarter. The ball found its way to Fuentes who hit a three with nine seconds to go. Madill took a 13-10 lead into the second quarter.

Second Quarter

Although Madill started with the ball to open the second quarter, they couldn’t convert through a Duran pullup jumper. Instead Byng junior guard Reed made a corner three forcing a Madill timeout.

But Madill bounced back in style as Vann made the bucket and was fouled. He missed the shot but gave the Wildcats a 15-13 lead. On the other end Vann nearly got a steal before the Wildcats forced a bad shot and got the ball back.

Byng’s Brecheen scored Seth again it to make it 24-23.

Presley cleaned up a miss on a fast break to give Byng a 25-24 lead with 1:30 to go.

Austin Maxey answered with a three on the wing to restore Madill’s lead (27-24).

Duran drove inside and hit a a midrange two to give Madill a 29-25 advantage going inside halftime.

Third quarter

Madill started with ball to open second half where Duran drove inside and scores to increase lead to 31-25.

Asa Robertson made steal, goes downcourt and finds Duran for close shot. Duran misses but gets own rebound and scores to increase Madill lead to 37-25. Then, Byng took a 30 second timeout at 6:04.

Eaton went to the line for two shots with 5:54 to go. He made both to make it 37-27.

Duran finds A. Robertson for two and is fouled on shot. Three-point play gives Madill a 40-27 lead. Fuentes called for foul on Brecheen who goes to line for two shots where he makes both. Score is now 40-29.

After two non-calls by the refs, Druan hit a three to give Madill a 43-29 lead.

Robertson beats the Byng defense down the floor, fakes the shot and finds Duran for a shot. Duran is knocked down by two players and goes to the line where he misses both shots.

Gray makes a basket inside (ctested). 11 makes a three on other end to make it 45-32.

During timeout Maxey comes in for Fuentes who picked up his third foul moments ago on a charge.

Byng’s Eaton grabs a board and takes it the other way for two to cut the Madill lead to 45-37.

Fourth quarter

Maxey stay in and runs the point. Duran sscores on the first possession of the fourth to restore Madill’s ten-point advantage (47-37).

A foul Asa sent Eaton to the line for two. He made the second to make it 47-38. Vann draws foul on 24 on next play (his fourth and he goes to the bench).

Robertson got ball from Maxey at top of key and rolled around and backward for a two. Madill lead now 49-40 with five minutes to go in game.

Eaton scores a two with 4:21 to go in fourth to cut Madill lead to 49-42. Vann was called for his fourth foul on shot by Eaton who makes it and goes to the line with 2:53 to go. Made free throw makes score 49-45.

Byng answers with corner three by senior guard Colin O’Grady with 1:45 to. Madill lead down to 51-48.

Madill has ball after Byng timeout. Vann dribbles around and draws contact from O’Grady. It is his fifth foul and sends Vann to line for 1 and 1. Vann makes both to give Madill 53-48 lead with 1:07 to go.

A pass inbounded to Duran who was intentionally fouled by Eaton with 3.6 seconds to go. Duran makes both shots to make it 58-51, where the game would end.
