The Lady Redskins and Coach Chad Rumer faced Marlow to begin the New Year's Classic on J anuary 6, 2022. They got off to a great st art by t aking down the Lady Outlaws of Marlow. Final score, 56 to 38.
In the first quarter , the game started out very tight, with the La dy Outla ws matching the Lady Redskins goal for goal. Olivia Quapaw start ed things off with a three-pointer. Later in the quarter , she h ad another one. Lanie French was right behind here with a three and a two-point bucket. Kamry Bohannon had a bucket inside. The game was all tied up, 13 to 13, after one.
The second quarter had senior Raegan Davis with a three-pointer and two field goals. Bohannon had a three as did Kay a Wiebener. Emily Bellettini got on the score book with a field goal and she was 2 of 2 from the line. French h a d another field goal. J aci Herndon was fouled on a three-point attempt but failed to make them pay. The constant full-court pressure was beginning to frustrate Marlow and the score going into the half was now 32 to 23, Lady Redskins.
Th e third quarter proved to be no different for Marlow. The Lady Redskins constant pressure on defen se was beginning to wear down the Lady Outlaws. Steals and turnovers were coming in bunches. On the offensive end, Ethel Stewart had a bucket and was 2 of2 from the line. Quapaw and Da vis both h ad field goals. Wieben er again had a three and J ayda Fost er broke the Outlaw hearts by hitting a three at the buzzer. Score now was 46 to 32.
The fourth quarter saw Bohannon get busy before turning things over to the reserves. She had a field goal and was 3 of 4 from the line. Davis and Bellettini each had field goals and French was 1 of 2 from the line. Marlow could only manage a six -point quarter . The final score, 56 to 38.
Box score: Davis led the team with 11 points. Next was Bohannon with 10. Quapaw and French both had eight. Bellettini and Wiebener both h ad six. Stewart h ad four and Foster with three. As a team, from t he line, 8 ofl4 for 57%. As a team, the Lady Redskins hit eight three-pointers.
The Lady Redskins faced Latt a on January 7, 2022, during the New Year's Classic semi-finals. The girls left everything on the floor during that game. Latta comes in with a 13 win and 2 loss record. They are the #1 seed in the tournament. They are ranked currently # 2 in the st ate. They lived up to the billing. Latta won and moved on to the finals on Saturday night. Final score, Latta 51, Lady Redskins 43.
After th e game, Coach Chad Rumer, was visibly proud of the effort and fight of his girls. On paper and to the eye, Latta was the far superior team. They have a 6'2" senior center/forward that is a very skilled player. They start three more seniors and a freshman. It was not a good matchup for the young Lady Redskins.
The Lady Redskins have developed a bad h abit of digging themselves a huge hole in t h e first quarter . This game was no different. Raegan Davis celebrated her eighteenth birthday by having one of her best games. The generally steady Olivia Quapaw started the game off by draining a three-pointer. Before she knew it, sh e was sitting on the bench with two quick fouls.
This would plagu e h er all night. Emily Bellettini got to the line but could not convert her two attempts. Meanwhile, Latta was off to the races. The score after one quart er was 19 to 3, advantage Latta. The hole was deep.
In th e second quarter , the scoring improved and t he defense as well. Davis got an inside bucket. Jaci Herndon , in relief of Quapaw, hit a nice three-pointer. Bellettini managed two field goals and a free throw among the giants. On the other end of the court, they held the Lady Panthers t o three points. The score going to the locker room, 22 to 13. Still trailing, but now a more man ageable deficit .
The third quarter saw Davis getting to the line, often . She went 4 of 6 and added a field goal. Quapaw came in and got called for another foul. Herndon came back in and hit for three and added two field goals. Ethel Stewart came in and went 2 of 2 from the line. Bellettini again got to the line and was 1 of2. All good for a 16-point quarter.
In the fourth quarter, if a comeback was to happen, it would help to hit threes. Lanie French and Herndon made it interesting. They each had a three, Herndon added a field goal, French a free throw. Latta called a timeout at the 2:18 mark, now leading by 9. The pesky Lady Redskins were still hanging around.
Kamry Bohannon was struggling with the same foul problem as Quapaw. She hit her first bucket at the 1:42 mark and pulled her team to within 7, 45 to 38. The clock was not helping, and the ladies were forced to foul. With 16.5 seconds in the game, the score was back to an eight-point margin. The final score was 51 to 43.
Box score: Freshman Herndon lead the team with 15 points including three treys. Next up was the birthday girl, Davis had 10 points. Bellettini, giving up about 6" to the Latta center, had eight. French had four, Quapaw three, and Bohannon and Stewart each with two. As a team, from the line, 10 of21.
The Lady Redskins faced Silo for third place in the tournament on January 8. The Silo girls (#7 in 2A) were reeling from a collision with the Dale Lady Rebels (#4 in 2A). The ladies clinched the third-place spot. The final score, 66 to 58.
In the first quarter, after the tip was controlled by Silo, the pressure began. Raegan Davis had a field goal and a free throw, Olivia Quapaw had two field goals, Jaci Herndon had a long range three-pointer. Kamry Bohannon chipped in a bucket and Emily Bellettini had two buckets underneath.Thebad news was Bohannon and Bellettini each had two fouls. The ladies were trailing by three, 19 to 16.
Second quarter action had Bellettini, popping out for a three and she added a field goal. And at the 6:30 mark, she was whistled for her third foul. Bohannon had a field goal. Lanie French had a three and two field goals. Quapaw had a long arching three-pointer. The defense was good, the pace was in Rumors' favor. At the half, Lady Redskins were hanging in, but now trailing, 42 to 33.
The Lady Rebels seemed to be out of gas in the third quarter. The Lady Redskins were still running and managed to flip the game. It always starts with the defense. Silo could only manage to score eight points. Meanwhile, the Lady Redskins had their best quarter scoring 22 points-Davis had four, Quapaw had four, Bohannon had four, Bellettini had four. Herndon and Wiebener both had three-point lasers. Wiebener sustained and blow to the face and had to leave the court. She would return in the fourth . The score now, 55 to 50, advantage Lady Redskins.
The Silo Lady Rebels coach did not help their cause by picking up a technical foul with 4:12 to play. With 2:11 to play, t h e Lady Redskins led 62 to 53. Quapaw had five points in the quarter, Davis had four. With the score 64 to 53, Silo had to foul. The clock at 53 seconds to go, Bohannon stepped to the line for 2 and hit them both. The final score, 66 to 58.
Box score: Quapaw lead the team with 16 points, followed closely by Bellettini who had 13. Next was Davis with 11 and Bohannon with 10. French had seven, Herndon six, Wiebener had three. Playing important minutes was Ethel Stewart. As a team, from the line, 6 of 13 for 46%.
