The Redskins finished the Dale Tournament against Elgin. Coach Taylor Wiebener and assistant Bobby McAdoo may look back on this game and say, “we needed this.” It was a tough, overtime game. Redskins brought home the third-place trophy. Final score, in overtime, 54 to 45.
In the first quarter, the Redskins came out swinging behind Brady Bristers two three-pointers. Reid Cason found the going in the paint much better during this game. He had two inside buckets. Cole Morgan, Braden Matchen each had a field goal. After one, the Redskins were leading, 16 to 9.
The Elgin Owls were proving to be a worthy opponent. They were not going down without a fight. Cason had two more buckets and Jahiem Nash had one. And that was it. Meanwhile, Elgin improved to the point they were only down by one, going to the locker room, 22 to 21.
The third quarter was closely contested as well. The Elgin Owls just would not give up. Brister again answered the bell. He was good for a three and a two point field goal. Cason again with two field goals and a free throw. Nash and Morgan had goals. The Redskins now had a three point lead, 36 to 33.
No one expected the fourth quarter to be any easier, and it was not. Brister again had a three-pointer as if to say, “we are not letting this one get away.” Matchen had a free throw and Tucker Rumer had two free throws. At the one-minute mark, the Redskins were leading by three. Elgin answered with a three-pointer to tie the game at 44 all.
In overtime, the Redskins would need heroics. They got it. Brady had a bucket, Wiebener hit a three-pointer. At the 2:15 mark, Matchen goes to the line and goes 2 of 2. The score was 51 to 44. Next up, the Owls foul Brister in frustration. He goes 1 of 2. Coach Wiebener called time out. Forced to foul, Owls pick Rumer again, he goes 0 for 2. They foul Rumer again, he goes 2 of 2. Game over.
Box score: Brister leads the team with 17 followed by Cason who had 15. Wiebener and Matchen each had five, followed by Nash, Morgan and Rumer who all had four. From the line, as a team, 9 of 14 for 64%.
Next up for the Redskins will be December 17, Friday, and a visit to Sulphur to take on the Bulldogs.
