Before the NFL season began, the fate of it was up in the air due to COVID-19. Many professional, and nonprofessional sports were not sure if they were even going to be able to have a season. The NFL bigwigs had a meeting and decided to go ahead with the season.

This decision alone cost the NFL some major players. Sixty-six players decided to opt out and not play this season for fear of contracting the virus. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, a Kansas City Chief offensive lineman was the first to start the trend of opting out when he decided to sit out this season. Now, since the end of July, sixty-six players have all followed suit and decided playing football is not worth their health.

The season that all football lovers have been anxiously awaiting began September 10, 2020. In just the mere five weeks since the season started, the league has been plagued with setbacks. Between players testing positive and other players being placed on the injured list, it seems that the 2020 season just is not going to be kind.

The list of players who were left fighting the coronavirus include Stephon Gilmore – Patriots, Bill Murray – Patriots, Cam Newton – Patriots, A.J. Terrell – Falcons, Jordan Ta’amu – Chiefs, and Maurice Hurst – Raiders. It seems the Titans were hit the hardest with the most positive cases at once. Those players are Adam Humphries, Kristian Fulton, Jeffery Simmons, Cam Batson, Kamalei Correa, Tommy Hudson, Beau Brinkley, DaQuan Jones, Greg Mabin, Corey Davis, and Isaiah Wilson.

Unfortunately, the injured list sidelined more players than the virus. In just a span of three days, October 10 through October 12, more than 150 players have been sidelined with injuries. The worst thing about the injured list is approximately sixty percent, over 90, of the list is out for the entire season.

The mostly advertised injury was Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott’s season ending injury during the Cowboys vs. Giants game on October 11. Prescott suffered a gruesome ankle injury in the third quarter. Prescott was in a 9-yard run with six minutes and 33 seconds left till the end of the quarter.

Giants defensive back Logan Ryan tackled Prescott, and the four-year Cowboys quarterback suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle as a direct a result of the tackle.

Prescott underwent surgery and is expected to recover. It is estimated he will be out of commission for four to six months.
