On March 12, the Madill Public School Board of Education held a special meeting to focus on one agenda item; whether or not to name Chad Speer as the Madill High School football coach.

As reported in the February 19 issue of The Madill Record, Todd Vargas resigned as the high school football coach and accepted a job in Durant.

This left the School Board scrambling to find a suitable replacement. Madill Superintendent Larry Case said they were not left wanting for applications. It was approximated that the School Board received 35 applications for the position of football coach.

This left the Board of Education with the onus of sifting through the applicants to find the most suitable for the position.

At the special board meeting on March 12, it was voted anonymously to name Speer as the new football coach.

Case said they are excited about what Speer is bringing to the table.

“He brings many things to our school and our kids that will be apparent both on and off the field,” Case said. “The future is bright with everything going on in our school and community.”

In a twist of light irony, Speer crossed over to Madill from Durant. He was the offensive lineman coach for the Lions. Now, he is a Wildcat.

Speer brings with him quite a bit of experience. Along with various coaching gigs, he was the offensive line coordinator for Southeastern Oklahoma State University from 2013 to 2018.
