The Madill Cross Country teams traveled to the Pontotoc Technology Center to compete in the Twenty Third Annual East Central University Tiger Chase Cross Country Invitational on September 9, 2021. The high school girls placed third as a team with Isabel Sanchez taking fourth place, running a 13:19.44.

Yvette Ariciaga placed eleventh with a time of 14:57.34; and Korlee Cunningham-Martin ran a 15:05.70 for thirteenth place. Head Coach Cale Eidson said the competition was tough.

“Our high school girls competed against some tough teams in Pauls Valley who have a good group of strong freshman girls this year.”

The high school boys placed second overall, with Plainview winning the meet. Eidson said the first-place team is always difficult to overtake.

“Plainview is always going to be tough to run with, we need to step up as a team,” Eidson said. Anthony Sanchez placed third running a 19:10.37. Tenth place went to Armando Gonzalez with a time 20:19.03. James Valadez took fifteenth places with a 20:51.30 time. Other runners were Jared Gallegos (21:24.28); Benjamin Hernandez (21:45.21); Saulo Castro (22:57.59); Kye Salazar (23:46.39); Cesar Moreno (24:27.52); David Mendez (25:53.21); and Barrick Idell (31:10.70).

Yadira Barbosa won the race for the junior high girls running a 9:55.92. Onelia Stumblingbear took ninth place with a 11:17.13 time. Madill hosted the Lake Country Conference (LCC) meet at City Lake on September 11. Before the races began, announcer Donny Raley recognized how our world changed twenty years ago from September 11, 2001. He also recognized Veterans and the thirteen soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan this month.

Coach Al Hoppers held the American Flag at the start/finish line where Old Glory was honored. The high school boys got the action started finishing third overall. Anthony Sanchez placed seventh, running a time of 17:33.06. Eidson said focus and finishing are things they need to work on.

“The boys, same as the girls, need to focus on staying strong and competing the last half of the race,” said Eidson.

“We have had better races, today we competed against tough teams with Byng being one of our tough competitors,” stated Eidson.

Isabel Sanchez ran a 13:12.58 to take second place. Fifteenth place went to Joslyn Stumblingbear with a time of 14:12.54. Jose Campos took third place running 12:38.90 for the junior high boys. The team placed fourth overall. The remaining team places as follows: Triston Barnes (13:38.86); Cash Cooper (13:47.52); Jagger Rogers (13:49.01); Ryder Douglas (13:56.30); Flavio Ibarra (14:21.95); Cooper McHatton (14:24.46); and Gael Gallegos (17:08.30).

The junior high girls took seventh place as a team. Yadira Barbosa ran a 9:32.41 to place second. Onelia Stumblingbear ran a 10:26.60 for tenth place. The other times were Hadon Stuckey (11:35.48) Dakota Peters (13:01.63); Brailea Page (13:17.66); Azucell Granados (13:30.42); and Camila Guevara (13:42.86).

The high school will travel to Stillwater on Saturday to run in the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree. “Our biggest focus this week will be toughness and being more competitive,” said Eidson.
