With the rivalry still blazing, the Wildcats return for a win

The Madill Wildcats used a strong fourth quarter to beat the visiting Kingston Redskins 42-33 in a game on Jan. 17.

Starting for the visitors were Brady Brister, Jesse Rose, Kaden Johnson, Jase Hayes and Dakota Weibener.

Meanwhile, the starting five for the hosts were Miguel Duran, Ezekiel Fuentes, Wyatt Gray, Asa Robertson and Aron Vann.

Duran opened the scoring with a midrange jumper with two minutes into the game.

As with their first meeting in December, the two teams moved at a fast pace and with high intensity.

Rose made one of two free throws to make it 2-1.

The first MHS sub was Lolo Ortega for Asa Robertson.

The Wildcats were without senior forward Trent Harvey who was suspended for one game after an incident in Tuesday’s game against Plainview.

Rose scored a close shot to give Kingston a 3-2 lead with a little more than four minutes left.

With 3:27 left, Johsnson chased a ball out of bounds and collided with the scorers table to no ill effect.

Austin Maxey waited to be the next Wildcat sub. He came in after a foul on Brister with 2:45 left in the first quarter.

The squads traded shots – and missed – for much of the first quarter.

Fuentes made a three with 1:52 to go. The shot gave the host a 5-3 lead.

KHS’s Weibener timeout was called with 1:24 left in the first quarter.

MHS ended up with the ball with 30 seconds to go in the opening period. Duran was unable to convert a close shot with 4.2 seconds to go. His one-handed attempt bounced off the rim.

At the end of the first quarter the score was Madill 5, Kingston 3.

Second Quarter

Kingston’s Marshall Ludrick forced a steal in a double team on Gray to open the second quarter. Johnson initially passed on a shot before making a short two to knot it at 5-5.

Then, MHS called a timeout with 5:59 to go. At that time, Kendall Robertson was called into the game for Gray.

Johnson hit a three at 4:30 and then Maxey hit his own trey 12 seconds later. After the shots, the sides were knotted at eight points apiece. Hayes scored a two, but Maxey came back with another trey to lift Madill into a narrow 11-10 lead.

Johnson scored a constested inside bucket with 3:20 to go. The foul was on Ortega but Johnson couldn’t convert the extra shot.

Madill got the ball back at the 3:12 and promptly took a lead through Ortega. The forward grabbed an offensive rebound and dribble through a trio of Redskin defenders on a looping up and under shot. 13-12.

Moments later, Kingston’s Johnson made a free throw to tie the game at 13-13, which would be the halftime score.

Third quarter

Kingston opened the scoring in the third quarter to take a 15-13 lead.

Madill head basketball coach Brett Weiberg got heated on a perceived non-call for contact by a Kingston player.

But Madill wouldn’t be out of the lead for long as Duran hit a three with 5:18 to go to give MHS a 16-15 advtange. The Wildcat defense forced a turnover to get the ball back but Vann missed the resulting open three.

Later, Duran grabbed an offensive rebound but was called for a foul. Weiberg remained incensed and talked with the referee between plays.

On the next Wildcat possession, Asa Roberston wasn’t able to convert as the Redskins played tough inside defense.

A miss by Kingston gave the ball back to Madill. Robertson was fouled on the shot with 3:25 to go. He made the first shot. Duran spun away from the defender to get an offensive rebound and made the resulting midrange jumper.

Kingston’s Johnson answered with a close bucket to make it 19-17.

Duran follwed with a two of his own to put Madill up 21-17.

Hayes drew contact and was fouled on his next shot attempt and goes to line for two. The Kingston player missed both shots.

Fuentes dribbles into space and found Duran for two.

Hayes answers with a three to make it 23-20. Duran’s next shot rolls in and out of the basket.

The miss came back to haunt the ‘Cats as Hayes tied the game with another three on the next possession. With the score tied at 23-23, Weiberg called a timeout with 1:13 to go.

Fuentes scored from close range coming out of the timeout to give MHS a narrow 25-23 lead.

KHS was not able to convert a shot on their possession.

Kingston’s Marshall fouled Fuentes for two shots with 3.7 second to go. Fuentes made both shots. The score at end of three quarters was 27-23 in favor of the hosts.

Fourth Quarter

Madill started fourth quarter with ball after Kingston missed a desparation heave to end the third.

After initially losing the ball, Madill forced a turnover which turned into a fast break. Fuentes found Duran for two points on the break.

Gray grabbed a rebound on a Kingston miss. Then, Duran made another shot and was fouled. Duran made the free throw to increase the Madill lead to 32-23.

Vann drove inside and wove toward the basket for a bucket. This increased the Wildcat lead to 34-23 with 6:02 to go in the game. KHS’ Weibener called a timeout.

After the timeout, Kingston went back to Hayes, who took a three. Ortega got a touch on the shot and it didn’t go in.

The Wildcats got the ball back and slowed the tempo down.

Weiberg, the Madill coach, told his players to dribble out and make their opponents come get them. The change in tactics resulted in a foul by Brister away from the basket.

Brister’s foul sent Duran to the line for a 1 and 1 and Madill into the bonus. With four minutes to go Kingston had seven fouls to Madill’s two.

Another foul sent Fuentes to the line but he was unable to convert the shot.

Hayes went to the line for two shots. He made both to cut the Wildcat lead to 34-25 with 3:48 to go.

Kingston took a 30-second timeout with 2:45 to go. Kingston’s Johnson made a three after the

Madill had the ball and made multiple passes before Kingst was forced into an intentional foul of Funetes with 1:45 to go. He misses the shot.

A Kingston bucket cut the Madill lead to 34-30.

The Wildcats’ Duran missed a three on the other end.

Then, Kingston’s Tucker Rumer missed an open corner three and Madill got ball back. The hosts call a timeout with 1:05 to go.

Following an intentional foul, Duran went back to the line where he bricked the first shot. He made the second shot to give Madill a 35-30 lead.

Hayes drove inside for a basket and drew the foul to make it 35-32 with 57.7 seconds to go. He made the free throw to cut Madill’s lead to 35-33.

Fuentes took a foul at midcourt and went to line with 55.3 to go. He missed the first shot. but hit the second to make it 36-33.

On the next possession, the ball went back back to Hayes who missed.

Madill’s Asa Robertson got the rebound and was fouled. He went to the line for two shots, where he made one to give Madill a 37-33 advantage.

In a bizarre sequence of events, Madill was given four free throws. The Wildcats’ Vann was attempting a three-pointed and was pushed by Kingston’s Hayes. Hayes received a technical foul, which was his his fifth of the game and resulted in a foul out.

After the game, Madill head coach Brett Weiberg said the contact was light.

Vann got four free throws and made three to push it to 40-33.

On the next possession, Fuentes drove the ball and was fouled intentionally. He made both to increase Madill’s lead to 42-33, which is where it would end.

With 13.6 some Madill fans started a “this one’s over chant.”
