MADILL – Just one less second and the game would have been tied at the end of regulation and it would have gone into penalty kicks.

But Friday night at Madill, old man fate rear its ugly head and the Ardmore Lady Tigers punched in a goal with one second left to win the game against the Madill Ladycats, 2-1. It was a tough pill to swallow as the Ladycats had disposed of Atoka with a very tidy 5-0 win to open their season this past Tuesday.

Ardmore scored first in the game with 31:50 left in the second half as Madison Chavez hit a good shot past the Madill goalkeeper. It only took about five minutes when Madill’s junior Cielo Gomez was just not to be denied when she got close to the Ardmore goal and nailed a hard shot left of the Ardmore goalkeeper which tied the game at one goal each with 26:44 left in the second half. The winning goal with one second remaining on the clock was scored by Aiden Mannings on a short breakaway.

Both teams had numerous scoring chances during the game as each had shots that just missed the goal or that the goalkeeper saved. Madill’s senior Claudia Perez did a good job directing the offense from her center midfield position.

There weren’t many fouls called in this hard fought game as both teams were very competitive. Most of the game though was played with Madill on offense in Ardmore’s end of the field. Madill had two corner kicks and Ardmore only had one corner kick during the game.

“We were nervous at first because Ardmore is a very good team and they had a strong game against Durant earlier this week,” said Madill Head Coach Jose Cortes. “But we reacted well when we had chances. We had a lot of chances to score in the second half. I told the girls to not get down on how the game ended. I saw a lot of good play and I consider it a win”

Cortes was very proud of the way the team played and said that the goal from Gomez was unassisted and a great play on her part. He was also very complimentary of the play of senior Giselle Bautista from her forward position.

Madill will travel over to Durant for their next game on Tuesday, March 10.

It should be a competitive game as Durant and Ardmore tied 0-0 in regulation but Durant won in penalty kicks. Durant also beat Atoka 5-0, which was the same score which Madill beat Atoka.
