Lady Redskins head to area tournament as champs

Coach Chad Rumer and the Lady Redskins took on the Valliant Lady Bulldogs in the Winners Bracket of the Class 3A Regional. Thanks to an 18 and 5 record and being the District champions, the Lady Redskins took advantage of the home court during the February 23 game. The Lady Redskins won 58 to 30 and advanced to the regional finals.

The Lady Bulldogs controlled the tip and that was just about the last time anything went their way. Before the Valliant coach could get a timeout, they trailed 7 to 0. That was after 1:35 seconds. Heneededanotheratthe3:01 mark and it was 17 to 2.

How it got there, Laney French opened with a threepoint barrage, she had two. OliviaQuapawhadoneofher own, hers was at the buzzer. Kaya“QuickDraw”Wiebener hit a nice three.

KamryBohannonhadtwo big steals and turned them both into baskets. She added another basket and she was 1 of 2 from the line. Emily Bellettini was off to a good start, as well. She had two buckets. The defense was mostly responsible for the 23 to 9 lead.

The second quarter was more of the same. French again was on fire with two three pointers. Quapaw penetrated the lane for a field goal.Bohannonhadtwomore buckets. Bellettini had three points via a field goal and a free throw. Jaci Herndon got in on the scoring with a bucket. The Lady Redskins were up by 28 at the half 40 to 12.

In the third, Bohannon showed no sign of letting up. She had two buckets and a free throw. Bellettini had a bucketandwas3of3fromthe line. Quapaw had a bucket underneath that she flipped over her shoulder without looking, and banked it in. Vallianthadseenenoughand went to the bench midway through the third and down by 30 points. It was 51 to 21 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth, Wiebener added another three pointer. EmilyBackenstoes,Tabiatha Arnold, Kelsie Cook, Maddi Willis,BrooklynClaborn,and Kandice Felton all played. Claborn and Felton each had a bucket. The final score was 58 to 30.

Box score: Bohannon lead the way with 15 points. Next, French and Bellettini, each had 12. Quapaw had seven, Wiebener six, Herndon, Claborn and Felton all with two points each. The starters did not play the fourth quarter.Thedefensewasspot on again, they did not allow double figures in any quarter.

The now 18 and 5, Lady Redskins, are on to the regional finals on Saturday night. This is not unfamiliar territory for them. These seniors have been here before and even the juniors and sophomores have some experience in “playoff season”

Lady Redskins vs Lady Outlaws

February 25 was the culmination of the Class 3A Regional Winners Bracket. It took a big-time effort from the Lady Redskins to overcome early foul trouble and come from behind and stay on top. The Lady Redskins beat the Marlow Lady Outlaws and won the Regional Championship. The final score was 54 to 47.

In the first, Kamry Bohannon got the Lady Redskins off to a good start with a bucket and a free throw. Emily Bellettini had a steal and a long outlet pass to a running Olivia Quapaw who hit the bucket and the free throw. She managed another free throw before she picked up her second foul and went to the bench with 3:00 left in the quarter.

The Lady Outlaws made their move. Bohannon managed two more free throws. After being tied at 7 all, Marlow took the lead at 13 to 12 going to the second quarter.

The second quarter had the Lady Outlaws going on a eleven-point run. Jaci Herndon scored and stopped the bleeding. Bellettini followed with a bucket, then Herndon scored again. Bellettini also was 2 of 2 from the line.

Marlow had everyone’s attention and they were not going down easily. They held a four-point advantage going to the lockers, 24 to 20.

Quapaw was back to the court in the third after a long rest. She had plenty of energy and fresh legs. She got right to work with a three pointer. Herndon had a nice long outlet pass off a rebound to Lanie French who converted the layup.

Quapaw was on a mission. She had two more buckets and another three pointer. Bellettini and Herndon each had buckets. The Lady Redskins were back on top going to the fourth. The score was 36 to 34, advantage Lady Redskins.

Bohannon was back in the game after a long rest herself due to foul trouble. If Quapaw saved the third, Bellettini saved the fourth. She had three buckets and was a perfect 2 of 2 from the line. Quapaw was right with her, with two buckets and was 4 of 6 from the line. Bohannon was 2 of 2 from the line. The Lady Outlaws fought as best they could and did not give up. The Lady Redskins held on to a 54 to 47 win to become the regional champs.

Boxscore:Quapawdespite setting out nearly half the game, lead the team with 22 points. Next was Bellettini with 17 tough inside points, including 5 of 5 from the free throw line. Bohannon had seven points. Herndon had six and French had two points.
