The Lady Redskins went head-to-head with the Sulphur Lady Bulldogs on January 16, 2021. This game’s schedule was compliments of COVID-19 — it had originally been scheduled to be first game of the year but Sulphur had to cancel.
The Ladies came ready to play. The last few years have seen some really good games with the Lady Bulldogs. The game was really close for the first three quarters but the Lady Redskins were able to pull this one out for a 41 to 30 victory.
The Lady Bulldogs defense was nothing Coach Chad Rumer’s girls had not seen. The double teams and sometimes triple teams on Avri Weeks were a normal event.
They do this to dare the outside shooters to take the shots. This has been particularly difficult without Ryan Herndon who missed her second straight game. On the other side of the ball, the Lady Redskins played a little bit of defense themselves. The “Rumer Press” is still alive and well.
Weeks had three field goals and was 1 of 1 from the line. She was helped by Emi O’Steen and Kaya Weibner who both had buckets. Which brings attention to Kamry Bohannon, she was 8 of 8 from the line. Also, she continued that streak with three more in the game to go to 11 straight before a miss. On the twelfth attempt, she had one rim out. She also had a field goal. At the end of one, Lady Redskins were in the lead 16 to 12.
The second was almost a carbon copy of the first. Weeks with three field goals and a free throw. Kiara Price had a three keeping the Lady Redskins still in the lead at the half, 26 to 23.
In the third quarter, the points were hard to come by and O’Steen thankfully had a nice three-pointer to keep the team from being shut out. As I mentioned earlier, Coach Rumors’ girls are used to playing hard nose defense every quarter. They only allowed the Lady Bulldogs a total of five points in this quarter. After three quarters, they were clinging to a one-point lead, 29 to 28.
The Lady Redskin’s lead team never takes a quarter off on the defensive side of the game. They held the Lady Bulldogs to a single basket in the fourth. Meanwhile, Weeks had two buckets and a free throw. Price had a field goal and was 1 of 2 from the line. Bohannon again had a field goal and was 2 of 2 from the charity stripe. Lady Redskins coast on in for a 41 to 30 victory.
Box score: Weeks lead the team with 19 points and was 3 of 3 from the line. Next was Bohannon with nine, she was 5 of 6 on free throws. Price had six points on a three-pointer and a two-point field goal. She was 1 of 2 from the line. O’Steen had five points and Weibner had two points. As a team they were 9 of 11 from the line, for 82%.
Next up for the Ladies will be Tuesday night against Broken Bow in a non-district game. They beat the Lady Redskins earlier this season in the New Years Classic. They are a 4A team that Coach Rumer would like to turn the tables on. This game again will be at the KMAC.
