This opponent looked familiar to the Redskins, Coach Taylor Weibner, and the Redskins’ fans. This is the same Broken Bow team they faced at the KMAC on Tuesday night. The same team that defeated us after three overtime periods. This did not go down the same. Maybe they were looking ahead to a finals’ matchup with the #2 in the state class 3A, 13 and 0, Hugo Buffaloes. Whatever the reason, the Redskins were ready to avenge that home loss. Redskins win, 48 to 42.
It was a battle from the initial tip off. Brady Brister came out with a three as did Tucker (Convection) Rumer. Jesse Rose hit a field goal. This is a short scoring summary of a quarter where every shot was contested and rebound and loose ball was fought over. It was a great effort by both teams. At the end of the quarter, Broken Bow was leading by one, nine to eight.
In the second quarter, the battle continued. Brister again had a field goal and a free throw. Jase Hays had a field goal and was 2 of 4 from the line. Marshall Ludrick was 2 of 2 from the line and Dakota Weibner missed his only attempt. The teams were tied at 15 all with 2:30 remaining, then Broken Bow carried an 18 to 17 lead into the dressing room.
The Broken Bow teams and coaches were right back out of the dressing rooms with several minutes left in the intermission. Coach Weibner and team used every minute allowed and went from the dressing room, quickly to the court. Maybe they should have talked longer. The Redskins were not ready to concede anything. Dakota Weibner was not going to let the quarter get away from them. He hit two three-pointers that let Broken Bow know they better not leave him open. Brister continued to play hard and added a field goal. Hays unfortunately picked up his fourth foul and he and Rose took a rest and Tucker Rumer, Drew Capps and Reid Cason came in for relief. After three quarters, the Redskins were trailing 31 to 25.
Hays and Rose returned to the lineup and at 2:40 to play, the Redskins had the lead at 38 to 34. This quarter belonged to Brister. He had two threepointers, two field goals and to top it all off went 4 of 4 from the line. Weibner drove a stake in their heart with another threepoint dagger. When Broken Bow resorted to fouling, Hays was ready. He finished four of six from the line and added a field goal. With five and a half seconds left, and trailing 48 to 42, the Broken Bow team conceded the defeat. Redskins won 48 to 42.
Box Score: Brister with another outstanding effort lead the team with 19 points. He was 5 of6 from the line. Dakota (Microwave) Weibner finished with 12 points, all coming on three-point shots. He was 0 for 2 from the line. Hays hit double figures with 10. He was 6 of 10 from the line and had two field goals. Rumer had three points, Ludrick and Rose each had two points. As a team from the line, 13 of 20 for 65%.
