Sprinting to a 33-0 first half advantage, the Kingston Redskins put it in cruise control the rest of the way, playing a plethora of reserves in a 47-14 triumph over Madill to remain undefeated on the season.
Action picks up considerably this week when perennial power Seminole and the state’s winningest football coach comes to Kingston for the first game of a pivotal two-game District 3A-2 homestand.
Head coach Brad Hill was extremely pleased with last week’s chance to get plenty of reps for reserves but not happy with the Redskins’ three turnovers that cost them scoring opportunities.
“I was excited how we came out,” Hill commented. “We started fast, the defense was physical and the offense was really efficient. We wanted to get as many kids in as possible to get varsity reps. We had three different quarterbacks throw touchdown passes, which is pretty rare. It was a good night but wasn’t as clean as I would have liked. We have to value the ball and protect it. We can’t leave points on the field. Fortunately, it didn’t hurt us last week but we have to fix that going forward or else it could bite us in a big game.”
Kingstonscoredonitsvery first play from scrimmage when Koewyn Young burst through a hole and rumbled 70 yards to paydirt. They utilized the air on their next series as Ethan Mowles connected with Jaksyn Martin for a 27-yard scoring toss to extend the margin to 13-0.
Ty Jones immediately jumped on a Madill fumble to set a 20-yard touchdown run from Trent Stewart for the third score in just over six minutes.
The stingy Redskin defense forced a quick threeand-out and the offense was right back in gear as Kayden Fenwick came in at quarterback and hooked up with Lander Burkhalter for a 47yard touchdown pass before the end of the first period.
Burkhalter intercepted a Madill pass midway through the second frame to set up Martin’s 17-yard scoring run for a 33-0 halftime lead following a pair of Kingston fumbles nearing the Madill red zone.
Mowles came back in for the first possession of the secondhalfandquicklyfound Damien Almos for a 31-yard touchdown adding to the advantage at 40-0. The final Kingston score in the fourth was a 31-yard strike from Conner Waller to Slayde Grammer.
Mowles wrapped up the game nine of 12 through the air for 122 with Jones snagging a team-best four receptions for 38 yards. Almos added two for 29 as Fenwick and Young caught one pass apiece for 14 yards.
Despite just a 3-3 record, Coach Hill knows the Chieftains will be a very formidable foe this week and the Redskins’ can’t be looking ahead to a showdown with league favorite Sulphur.
“Coach Snyder does a great job and we know it is going to be a tough game,” Hill added. “We are just focused on Seminole and getting to 4-0 in district play. Coach Snyder has the most wins of any coach in Oklahoma football history. We won’t be looking ahead against them. They have a good receiver and running back, big linemen and multiple fronts defensively so can mix it up and you have to prepare for anything. We have to clean up some things this week or it could be a tough night.”
