January 23, 2021 was the end of a long week for Coach Taylor Weibner and his Redskins. It consisted of four games in five nights. The Redskins should count it as a successful week. In the tournament, they won their first two games to put them in the finals on Saturday.
They knew all week that the Hugo Buffaloes were waiting on the opposite side of the Atoka tournament. The undefeated Buffaloes, the # 2 team in class 3A. The Redskins fell 47 to 42.
In first quarter action, the dogfight began from the tip off. This turned out to be a boxing match instead of a horse race, much like the Broken Bow game the night before. Every shot was contested, every rebound was fought for, and every loose ball was dived upon. Dakota (Microwave) Weibner got off to a great start. He hit two three-point baskets and a field goal. They were set on making it hard for Brister. He was 2 of 2 from the free throw line. After one, the game is all tied at 10 each.
The second quarter was much the same. This time, Brister struck first with a three. Jase Hays managed a field goal and was 1 of 2 from the line. This game was on pace to be very low scoring. The score at the half was 16 to 15, Redskins had the lead.
In the third quarter, the Buffaloes made their move. They managed a 17-point quarter. This proved to be their most productive quarter all night. No one wearing Red thought that it was over. Brister was getting contested closely on every field goal attempt. He managed a field goal and went 4 of 4 from the line.
They might have remem-bered to keep an eye on Weibner. He had another three and just for good measure, Marshall Ludrick connected on one himself. The Buffaloes had the lead and they wouldn’t give it up. Score after three, 32 to 28. Redskins trailing by four points.
In the fourth quarter, the battle continued. Skipping ahead to the 1:33 mark, the Buffaloes, leading now by seven, 38 to 31. Tucker (Convection) Rumer drained his trademark shot, the threepointer, to pull the Redskins to within two, the score was 42 to 40. However, they could not cut it closer. Brister had a field goal and was 2 of 2 from the line. Hays had a field goal but did most ofhis damage from the free throw line. He was 5 of 7. The final score was 47 to 42.
Box score: Brister had 15 points and was 8 of 8 from the line. Weibner had a total of 11 points, Hays was next with, 10 points and was 6 of 11 from the line. Ludrick and Rumer both ended with three points each. As a team, the Redskins shot 14 of 19 from the free throw line for 74 %.
Immediately following the game, the championship trophy presentation was made to the Hugo Buffaloes, and to the runner up, the Redskins. The All Tournament team was named and Brady Brister and Dakota Weibner represented their team.
