Boys v Idabel
The Redskins participated in the Atoka Tournament with the first game being on J anu ary 20. The Redskins won over Idabel, 64 to 43.
In the first quarter, all five starters scored. They were led by seniors Brady Brister and Braden Matchen who had two buckets each. Mason Burkhalter and Dakota Wiebener each had three points, and Reed Cason had two bucket s. On the defensive end, the Redskins owned the boards with everyone getting it done. The Redskins followed up in the second quarter with another 18-point effort. Burkhalter and Wiebener each had three -ointers. Matchen was off to a good start, and he kept it up claiming eight points. Brister was good for a bucket and was 2 of 2 from the line. The Redskins were in control, 36 to 22, at the halftime.
The third quarter had the Redskins again establishing themselves and taking care of business. This time, it was Brister getting in the paint and hitting short jumpers. He had three field goals. Matchen, Gage Gill, and Cason all had buckets. Cason's was a two-h anded slam. Redskins' lead going to the fourth was 48 to 31.
The fourth quarter again had solid defense and good rebounding. Brister was getting into the lane and hitting short jumpers. He h ad two buckets and was 2 of 3 from the line. Cason dunked again and had a put back. At the 2:00 mark, with the lead now 60 to 35, Wiebener emptied the bench. Eli Oliger made good use of his time and promptly had two buckets. The final score was Redskins 64 and Idabel43.
Box score: Brister again with a good game lead the team with 18 points. He was followed closely by Matchen who had 14, and Cason with 10. Burkhalter had eight and Wiebenerwithsix. Oligerfor four and Gill with two. From the line, 5 of 7 for 71 %.
Boys v Long Grove
Redskins met the Longhorns from Lone Grove on Friday in the Atoka basketball tournament on January 22. The Horns are not an unfamiliar opponent for Coach Taylor Wiebener and the Redskins. They are Lake Country Conference members that the Redskins play biannually. The Redskins a dvanced on to the Saturday night final with the final score of 58 to 35.
As per typical most Kingston games, Brady Brister comes out firing and tonight was no exception. However, tonight he was looking to find his range from the threepoint line. He knocked down two in the first along with a two-point field goal and was 1 of 2 from the free throw line. He was h elped by Mason Burkhalter, Braden Matchen and Reed Cason who all had field goals. They also added free throws to their totals. At the end of the quarter, the Redskins led 18 to 6.
In the second, Brister was good for a couple more field goals. Dakota Wiebenertook over the heavy lifting for this quarter. As the Horns fought to cover the inside attack, Wiebenerwas loading up. He hit two quick three-pointers and timeout could not be called quick enough . At the 3:45 mark, the Redskins were leading, 30 to 10. Wiebener also managed a field goal. Matchen was good again underneath. Casongottothe line and was 2 of 2. Tucker Rumer added a free throw. Going to the break, it was 35 to 12.
Someone didn't get the memo that it might be good to guard Wiebener. He put up the exact same line as he had in the second quarter, two three-pointers and a field goal. Matchen again went back inside and had two more field goals. Tucker Rumer and Cason were both 2 of 2 from the line. The Horns were not having any luck cutting into the lead. Redskins now led 51 to 26.
In the fourth quarter, Matchen again had a field goal and closed out a solid night by scoring in every quarter. Looking over the last four games, he has scored in 12 of the 16 quarters and had a 11.5-point average for that span. He has also been a terror on the boards. Wiebener again had a field goal. With this cushion, Coach Wiebener was able to play most of the fourth quarter with the youngsters. Eli Oliger got to the line and was 1 of3. Drew Anderson had a bucket. The final score was 58 to 35.
Box score: The Redskins were lead by the sharp shoot ing of Wiebener who had 18 points. He was closely followed by Brister with 13 and Matchen who had 11. Cason had eight points, a big dunk in the first and he was 6 of 6 from the free throw line after that. Rumer had three, Burkhalter and Anderson each had two and Oliger with one. As a team, from the free throw line, 12 of 17 for 71 %.
Coach Wiebener, and his assistant Bobby McAdoo, have worked their team back into the rankings again. This week they appeared at# 18.
Boys v Madill
The Marshall County rivalry spilled over to Atoka County on Saturday as t he Redskins found themselves facing the Wildcats ofMadill in the finals. It was a great game without the outcome the Redskin faithful had hoped for. The Wildcats prevailed, 51 to 45 and took home the hardware.
The Atoka school administration should thank Marshall County basketball fans as both teams had great fan support. It was a full house and it was a great game. It is an odd feeling playing your rival on a neutral floor. The intensity of the game had very little to do with a trophy. It was all about the pride these kids have in their schools. Coach Weiberg and the Wildcats are to be congratulated.
The first quarter highlights were a precursor to how the game would be played. It was going to be a battle right down to the wire. As usual, Brady Brister would come out firing. He hit his first threepoint attempt. The Redskins were moving the ball around and everyone was looking for their shot. It was not easy as every shot was contested and every loose ball was fought for. Braden Matchen h ad a bucket and hit a free throw. Dakota Wiebener connected on his three-point attempt. Reed Cason had a bucket. Still, the Redskins found themselves trailing by 1, 13 to 12 at the buzzer.
It became evident early on that this was going to be a low scoring affair. That is due to the defense both teams were playing. Brister again hit the three-pointer. He was also getting to the free throw line. He hit five of his six attempts in the quarter. He capped it off with another three-pointer. Matchen again h ad a field goal. That was all the scoring the Redskins could muster. Peeking at the Madill score sheet, Ezekiel Fuentes was carrying the Wildcats on his own. Mter scoring 11 points in the first, he followed up by scoring 16 in the second. In both quarters, only one other Wildcat scored. Still the Redskins trailed, now by 5, 30 to 25.
Brister followed up his strong first half by getting three field goals. Matchen also had a bucket and a free throw. Wiebener also struck gold with another threepointer to keep the Redskins within one, 38 to 37. Fuentes was held to five points.
Going to th e fourth, the Redskins found that field goals were going to be hard to come by. In fact, Matchen scored the only one the team would have. He was also 2 of 2 from the line. Brister was getting to the line and was 4 of 6. Mason Burkhalter missed his three free throw attempts. As the clock was winding down, the Redskins needed to foul to stop it. The Wildcats were hitting their free throws, they were 7 of 8 down the stretch. Fuentes was held to seven points. The final score was 51 to 45.
Box score: Brister lead the team with 25 points. Matchen was next with 12. Wiebener had six and Cason had two. As a team, from the line, 14 of24, 58 %. Brister, Wiebener and Burkhalter were all named tothe All-Tournamentteam.
