The Lady Redskins played the Sulphur Lady Bulldogs on December 17, 2021, with hopes of heading into Christmas break with a win. Fortunately, that was exactly what they got. The Lady Redskins won, 57 to 36.
Early in the first quarter, the game looked like it would be a close and hard-fought contest. The Lady Bulldogs were tall, athletic and determined. At the end of the quarter, it was all tied up at 13 to 13.
The Lady Redskin attack was balanced. Kamry Bohannon and Jaci Herndon both had three-pointers. Olivia Quapaw was 2 of 2 from the line. Lanie French had a field goal and Emily Bellettini had three points the old fashion way; a field goal and a free throw. Five players scored but the score was tied.
Second quarter action had French and Quapaw both hitting three-pointers. Herndon was 2 of 2 from the line. It was a good job by the back court. In the front court, Bellettini was in a pushing contest with taller girls, and she was winning that fight. She had four field goals and was 1 of 2 from the line. Going to the locker room the Lady Redskins had a three point lead, 32 to 29.
In the third quarter, the wheels came off for the Lady Bulldogs. While the Lady Redskins were putting up a 17-point quarter, the Lady Bulldogs could manage only three points. The outside shot was falling.
Herndon again had two three-pointers. Quapaw had a field goal and was 2 of 2 from the line. Raegan Davis had a field goal. Bohannon had another three-pointer. Bellettini was good for another field goal underneath. The score after the third quarter was 49 to 32.
After a dismal shooting performance in the third from the Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Redskins were ready to put this one behind them and in the “win” column. It was not a problem. Sulphur could only manage four points. The Lady Redskins had a field goal and two free throws from Bellettini. Payton Dougherty had a bucket. Bohannon was 2 of 2 from the line. The final score, 57 to 36.
Box score: Bellettini led the team with 17 points. Next was Quapaw and Herndon with 11 points each. Bohannon followed with eight and French had five. Payton and Davis each had two points. As a team, from the line, 14 of 23 for 61 %. It always starts on defense with Coach Rumer. He should be pleased with the effort tonight holding Sulphur to seven total points in the second half.
Kaya Wiebener left the game early in the first quarter with an injury. The extra rest will be good for her.
The Lady Redskins and Coach Rumer are going to the holiday break in good shape. A conference win that will hopefully propel them right into the New Years Classic tournament which starts January 6, 2021. With the brackets now available, The Madill Record will have a preview article next week.
