For Kingston High School juniorHaydenFloyd,musicis more than just a class—it’s a community, a creative outlet and a driving force in her life. After spending six years at Kingston, Floyd said she has found her place within the halls of the school, especially through her involvement in boththebandandJazzBand.

Floyd said she didn’t always envision herself as a musician. In fact, she originally joined band for a pretty simple reason: she didn’t want to stay in health class anymore. What started as a convenient schedule change quickly grew into something much more meaningful. She discovered a love for playing her instrument, and that passion continues to guide her today.

Her dedication and leadership didn’t go unnoticed. At the beginning of her sophomore year,Floydwasselected as a KHS drum major—an achievement that marked a major turning point in her musical journey. Stepping into this role strengthened her confidence and deepened her connection to the band, allowinghertohelpguideand inspire her fellow musicians.

Now a committed and enthusiastic member of both musical groups, Floyd said thesupportshereceivesplays a huge role in keeping her motivated.

“I love playing my instrument, and the unending support from my friends and family keeps me going,” she explained.

Thebandroomhasbecome a second home to her and the friendships she’s formed there have strengthened her dedication even further.

Looking ahead, she said she has big plans for her future. After graduating from Kingston, she hopes to attend the University of Oklahoma, where she plans to earn a master’s degree in human services counseling while also minoring in business. Her goal is to build a career where she can help others, combining her compassion withheracademicambitions. Floyd said there is one quote that has guided her as she thinks about her future.

“If you do something you love, you will never work a day in your life.”

She said she carries those words with her as a reminder to pursue what brings her joy—whether that’s music, helping others or discovering new opportunities beyond high school.

From health-class escapee to drum major and dedicated musician with a clear vision for her future, Floyd is a testamenttohowunexpected choices can lead to meaningful passions.
