Facing off for the second time this year, Madill girls and Kingston boys finished season sweeps of the Marshall County rivals before a boisterous crowd in Kingston last Friday.
In a showdown of Top 10 foes in the girls’ contest, Class 4A’s eighth ranked Madill got off to a strong start and steadily pulled away for a 45-32 win over the 3A’s 10th rated Kingston.
The Redskins led from the start in the nightcap but had to withstand a furious Madill comeback big for the 60-53 decision.
A third matchup between the schools is possible on Saturday with each team participating in the Atoka Tournament.
Girls
The Holmes sisters set the tone from the start, combining for 10 in the opening period while Kingston failed to find much offensive rhythm as Madill captured a commanding 15-6 lead after the first.
Points were very hard to come by for the Lady Redskins once again in the second stanza, managing just four points as Madill pushed the cushion to 24-10 at the break.
The scoring was much the same in the third quarter with Elexis Holmes pumping seven of 12 Lady Wildcat points in extending the lead to 36-16 heading to the final period.
Kingston finally got the offense untracked, doubling their scoring output with 16 in the frame but it proved to be too little, too late in the quest for a comeback.
Elexis Holmes was the Madill catalyst throughout, pouring in 17 points while her sister E’Niyah Holmes contributed 10. Arlette Andrade scored seven, La’Miyah Brown chipped in six and Luci Douglas added five.
Joley Heydon spurred the late charge for Kingston, wrapping up with a team high 14 points. Cassidy Walker managed seven, Avery Ludrick scored five, Coby Davis three, Taylie Wiebener two and Carli Lilley chipped in one point.
Boys
Hayden Seeney tossed in one three pointer in every quarter to spark Kingston, but it was second half three point shooting by Madill that made things interesting down the stretch.
Seeney had five points and Blane Henry scored four in the opening period to stake the Redskins to a 16-12 edge. It was a 10-8 scoring flurry in the second frame as well with Seeney pitching in seven of the Kingston points for a 26-20 cushion at the break. Ryan Anderson kept the Wildcats within striking distance by contributing 10 before intermission.
It was still a 38-31 Redskin advantage through three stanzas in spite of three Cooper treys for Madill. Cooper lit it up for three more three pointers in the fourth while Sammy Duran added two more for a 22-point quarter.
The bad news for the Wildcats however was that Kingston notched 22 in the frame as well with Seeney popping in seven and Brock Rumer adding nine, including a perfect seven for seven at the free throw line to ice the win.
Kingston was fueled by Seeney’s 22 points along with 16 from Rumer and 11 byBlaneHenry.SamWalker had six with Lander Burkhalter tossing in five.
Cooper tallied 18 points with six second half treys to pace the Madill scoring attack. Anderson also reached double digits with 14 and Duran checked in with 10.
Also for the Wildcats, Jagger Rogers scored six, Adrian Gomez had four and Gilberto Grimaldo pitched in a point.
