The Kingston Redskins faced the Sulphur Bulldogs on December 17, 2021. It was a disappointing send off into the Christmas break. Redskins dropped an important Lake Country Conference match up with Sulphur. The final score was 57 to 38 in favor of the Bulldogs.
The first quarter was a low scoring defensive battle. Or it was possible that neither team was shooting particularly well. Perhaps, it was an omen when a Bulldog banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer to give his team the lead. Brady Brister had a field goal and two free throws. Tucker Rumer had two free throws and Dakota Wiebener had a three. Trailing by one, 10 to 9, the game went into the second quarter.
If anybody was thinking that it could not get worse, it can, and it did. Reid Cason scored two inside buckets and he was the only Redskin scoring. Still as awful as it was, the Redskins only trailed 16 to 13 going into the locker room.
Third quarter action had Brister with two field goals and 2 of 2 from the line. Cason was 1 of 2 from the line. Now trailing 35 to 20, the team headed into the fourth.
A fifteen-point lead is not insurmountable but not prob able if it must be done in one quarter. However, seniors Braden Matchen and Brister gave it a shot. Matchen had three field goals, Brister was great with two three-pointers and two field goals for a tenpoint quarter.
Cason was 2 of 3 from the line. All for an 18-point effort, the best of the night. With 48 seconds to play, the Redskins cut it to within nine points but could get no closer. Redskins lost this one, 49 to 38.
Box score: Brister led the team with 20 points, followed by Cason with seven. Matchen had 6 (all in the fourth), Wiebener had three, Rumer had two. As a team, from the line, 9 of 14 for 64%.
It is not how the team is playing in December that counts. It is how they in March that matters. This team has plenty of time to get things straightened out before then. The next hurdle will be the New Years Classic starting on January 6, 2021.
Don’t forget, next week, The Madill Record will have a preview of the tournament, and a look at the brackets. See everyone at the KMAC for some great basketball starting on January 6, 2022.
