Lady Redskins
In the late 50s The Twilight Zone was a popular TV program. Google defines it as, “a strange mix of horror, science-fiction, drama, comedy and superstition.” That was a fitting description of the Tuesday night game at Plainview on January 26, 2021. Other spectators might tend to agree with that assessment. The Lady Redskins escaped with a two-point win, 56 to 54.
The first quarter was not pretty by any means. Plainview girls shot the threes like they were free throws. It did not help that the opponent had a girl inside that was over six feet tall. To be blunt, the Lady Redskins did not appear to be ready to play. They looked tired, which could be understandable, last week’s schedule was grueling. Four games in five days will do that to any conditioned athlete. Kamry Bohannon had a three and a two-point field goal, and Raegan Davis had two buckets. After one quarter, the Lady Redskins trailed 19 to 9.
The second quarter was not any better. Another total score of nine points for the second quarter, just like the first. This time, they were all from Avri Weeks. She had three field goals and was 3 of 5 from the line. The half ended with the Lady Redskins still trailing 32 to 18.
The Lady Redskins closed the gap in the third quarter, when the Lady Redskins found the three-point shot. Davis, Bohannon and Emi O’Steen all had one. Weeks continued to work hard inside, she had three buckets, and was 1 of 2 from the line. Ryan Herndon, back from quarantine, was 1 of 2 from the line. The Ladies had cut the deficit to four points. The score was now 39 to 35.
By the fourth quarter, the game was now within reach. The Plainview coaching staff decided it was time to spread the court out and work the clock down. About the same time Coach Rumer decided to pick them up at the half court line and a few minutes and a few steals later, the Lady Redskins were on their way. Weeks had three baskets and was 1 of 4 from the line. It was the inside game of O’Steen that put them in the lead for good. She had three baskets and was 2 of 2 from the line. Bohannon had a bucket and two huge free throws. Then, Herndon had a bucket. The Lady Redskins escaped with a 56 to 54 win.
Box score: Weeks lead the team with 23 points, 5 of 11 from the line. Bohannon finished with 12 points and was 2 of 2 from the line. O’Steen had 11 points and 2 of 2 from the line. Davis had seven points, including an important three pointer in the third quarter. Herndon finished with three points; she was 1 of 2 from the free throw line. As a team, the Lady Redskins were, from the free throw line, 10 of 17, 59%.
The glaring problem tonight was the turnover bug and they really never got rid of it. However, to their credit, they kept hustling and found a way to win. As Herndon regains her stamina she will be a big part of the season going forward. Her shooting was off but the steals on defense, especially in the fourth quarter were huge.
