On Tuesday, January 19, 2021, the Madill Wildcats traveled to play the Dickson Comets. The boys kicked offthe night with Madill winning 41 to 30. Junior Ezekiel Fuentes led the Wildcats with 11 points.
Junior Kendall Robertson assisted with 10 points. Senior Miguel Duran followed with nine points. The Lady Wildcats kept the winning streak and won 53 to 41. Juniors Jayden Weiberg and Joslyn Stumblingbear each had 11 points. Seniors Ximena Gomez and Mariana Mendez with 10 points each.
On Thursday, January 21, Madill traveled to Atoka to play in the Atoka Wampuscat Classic Tournament. The Lady Wildcats played the Kingston Redskins losing 41 to 50. The girls’ head coach Shawn Runyan said he recognized a few issues that attributed to the loss.
“We had too many turnovers and did not rebound well,” Runyan said.
Weiberg led the Lady Wildcats with 14 points. Junior Braylee Schneider had eight points followed by Mendez with five points.
The Wildcats hit a speed bump that slowed their progress in the tournament. They played the Broken Bow Savages losing 32 to 49. Boys head coach Brett Weiberg said it was just a bad day for the Wildcats.
“I felt like we played pretty good basketball and just came up short,” Weiberg said. “Sometimes teams play bad and win and sometimes teams play pretty good and lose.”
Duran led the Wildcats with 17 points. Fuentes followed with nine points and Junior Nick Northcutt with four points.
Friday, both teams played the Idabel Warriors. The Lady Wildcats won 57 to 48. Weiberg led the team with 28 points. Stumblingbear had 14 points and Mendez with six points.
The Wildcats lost to the Warriors, 46 to 49. Duran had 21 points. Fuentes had 15 points, and Junior Javier Gomez had five points.
Weiberg said they are doing somethings right.
“We are going to play close games and making the right plays throughout the game and certainly the last two minutes ofgames is vital,” said Weiberg. “We need to grow in our late game situations and continue to improve. We need to put the work in and trust the process.”
The Wildcats were eliminated from the tournament after their second loss.
The Lady Wildcats played the Pauls Valley Panthers on Saturday, January 23, for Consolation. Weiberg had 14 points. Schneider and Stumblingbear both had eight. Madill took the consolation slot. Junior Jayden was selected all-tournament.
Runyan said the back-to-back games in the tournament was tiring.
“Playing three games in a row we tough,” said Runyan. “It was our fourth game the week.”
