After playing on Tuesday, and having one day off, the Lady Redskins started the WampusCat Classic in Atoka on January 21, 2021. The first-round opponent was a hometown rival — none other than the Madill Lady Wild Cats. Each team knows each other well. This was the second meeting of the two schools this season with another being scheduled for February 16. The Lady Redskins took this one, 50 to 41.
The first quarter got under way with Avri Weeks opening up the floor a little and hitting short jumpers instead of the standard post moves that she has always depended on. Double teams and sometime triple will make you do that. It also helps when Kamry Bohannon is locked in on her three-point shots. Bohannon hit two threes and had two field goals fora ten point effort in the quarter. Weeks had the short jumpers and a put back plus 2 of 2 from the line. Emi O’Steen had a three and Kaya Weibner had a field goal. That adds up to a 23-point quarter and it was good for a 23 to 12 lead.
The second quarter saw Weeks getting the ball down low and getting to the free throw line. At 6”1,” she is very hard to stop down low. She had all the scoring for the Lady Redskins. Four field goals and 3 of 3 from the line for her. That makes an eleven-point effort to go with the ten-point first quarter — a 21-point first half for her. The score going into the locker room was 34 to 24.
The Redskins must have followed the old adage, “if it’s not broke don’t fix it,” because the third quarter was more of the same. Weeks with seven points including 1 of 3 from the line. Bohannon added a field goal and Britt O’Steen was 1 of 2 from the line. The third quarter came to an end with the Lady Redskins now leading 44 to 30.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Wildcats fought back. In fact, with 1:00 remaining, the lead was cut down to 10. Reagan Davis scored a field goal as did Weeks. From the free throw line, Lanie French was 0 of 2, Emi O’Steen was 0 for 2, Bohannon was 1 of 2 and Weeks was 1 of 3. This often times can cause a problem, however the Lady Redskins would prevail 50 to 41.
Box Score: Weeks lead all scorers with 29 points. She was 7 of 11 from the line. Next was Bohannon with 13 points. She was 1 of 3 from the line. O’Steen had three points. Davis, and Weibner each had two points. Britt O’Steen was 1 of 2 from the line. For the team, they were 9 to 14 from the line for 64%.
