Aiden Polk rushed for 176 yards and four scores and quarterback Ethan Mowles tallied 265 total yards and two more touchdowns in fueling a 60-30 Kingston football victory over Hooks, Texas last week.
The Redskins amassed 560 yards of total offense and came up with several big stops defensively as well while slowing down a Hooks offense that was averaging more than 60 points per game.
Kingston looked like it might run away with the victory, building a 20-6 lead with Polk’s first scoring run and a pair of Kayden Fenwick touchdowns. Hooks responded with 16 straight points to go in front with 5:19 left in the half.
That lead was short-lived with the Redskins going in front for good just 1:40 later with a quick 67-yard march. Mowles bolted 37 yards to jumpstart the drive, hit Fenwick on a 27-yard pass on the nextplayandPolkthenraced 10 yards to paydirt and the 26-22 edge at intermission.
Two lengthy Kingston drives in the third quarter increased the advantage to 39-22. Hooks quickly got one of those back before the Redskins’ ownbigplay15seconds later when Kelly Gray shot through the line and went 59 yards for a touchdown to ignite a flurry of 21 closing points.
Polk’s fourth touchdown came with 6:48 left and Fenwick set up Koewyn Young’s 15-yard capping score with an interception.
Gray pitched in 88 yards on five carries while Fenwick had two receptions for 51 yards. Ty Jones also notched threecatchesfor28yardsand Damien Almos tossed in one grab for 26 yards.
“There were a lot of swings of momentum,” Kingston head coach Brad Hill commented. “We came out fast at 20-6 and then they were in front in the second quarter. That drive late in the second quarter really helped us regain control and the momentum into halftime. We then came out with some great energy and played extremely physically after the break.
“I felt like we played stronger and stronger as the game went along. I thought our line opened holes and our defensivecoachesmadegreat adjustments at halftime.”
Now 2-0, the Redskins will look to wrap up the non-district portion of the schedule perfectly in an interesting showdown at Class 6A Putnam City West in Oklahoma City on Friday night.
ThePatriotsareaveraging 30 points per game behind junior quarterback K.J. Cowell but are also yielding 54 points an outing with losses to Class 5A El Reno and 6A Enid.
“They are a good football team,” Hill said. “They are big and physical with explosive skill kids. A typical Class 6A team. The quarterback is extremely mobile and can throw and run effectively. It’s going to be a challenge for us.
“We’ve seen a very physical team so far in Stigler and a team with loads of speed in Hooks. Putnam City West is a combination of those. We have to go in with a good plan and play well. This week we are going to continue making corrections and keep taking it one game at a time.”
