TFD: Christmas safety

Please be safe with your outdoor Christmas lights. An average of 770 fires annually are caused by outdoor Christmas lights, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Here are a few hazard and safety tips. This will help you avoid light sparks, blowouts and fires.

Beware of broken or missing bulbs. Fix busted string lights, CNET has a full guide to fixing them.

Use the correct ladder, wooden or fiberglass is preffered, metal conducts electricity.

Pick the right lights. Look for the UL seal on them.

Choose the correct extension cords, use one rated for outdoors.

Prevent tripping hazards when installing. Dont go over three strands, as recommend by the ESFI.

LEDlightsarerecommend with a UL listing..Do not put cords through windows or doors as the may be pinched.

Never use staples, tacks or nails when installing lights, as the can easily pierce the strand. Turn lights off overnight. Happy decorating to all of you.

The cost is $75 per day and can only be rented by members of the Fire District. The building capacity is 158.
