AnOklahomanativeband performed at the 2025 Rocklahoma music festival in Pryor, Okla. Hinder, a rock band that formed in Oklahoma City in 2001, are best known for their song “Lips of an Angel.”
Guitarist and founding member, Joe Garvey, said that the band’s name derived from aggravation.
“Back in the day, 2001-ish, we were starting to get gigs,” Garvey said. “We had one gig booked and they kept asking us what our band name was. We couldn’t think of a name, so we pulled out a Thesaurus and looked up synonyms for frustrated and found the word hinder.”
The band said there a few must-haves that they take on tour with them. However, noise-cancelling headphones made the top of each member’s list.
The band members don’t have a preference when it comes to where the best place to play at is. They said it is a show-by-show thing. “If the crowd shows up and having a great time, that’s all that matters,” lead singer Marshall Dutton said. “It’s an amazing feeling when thousands of people are singing your song back to you.”
Speaking of the audience singing their songs, their most well-known song, “Lips of an angel” was mentioned. They said they’ve tried disliking the song because it is their most requested one. However, it’s such a “fun song to sing” and the fans love it so much, they can’t help but love it, as well.
They had some advice for budding musicians thinking about going on the road. They started the advice by joking, “don’t drink the water on the bus, get a real job and don’t do it.”
However, they had some serious advice, too.
“Learn every aspect of business to your band,” they said. “From the graphic design to the light show. Make it look bigger than you are.”
The band member also wanted to thank their fans for their loyalty.
“This band has been through quite a bit of ups and downs,” Garvey said. “Through it all, the fans have stayed loyal and true. Thank you for that.’
