Lady Wildcats sweep, boys drop pair in Festival

Madill’s girls basketball team won two games while the boys dropped a pair against large school foes in the rugged Yukon Festival going into Christmas Break.

The 10th ranked Lady Wildcats edged Class 4A’s 13th rated Weatherford, 42-40, before cruising by Class 5A Lawton MacArthur, 48-22, as they improved to 7-1 on the season.

Coach William Bencoma’s boys unit wasn’t as fortunate facing a pair of Class 5A opponents with an 81-48 verdict to Lawton Mac and 67-45 setback facing Western Heights.

Both teams will be back in action Tuesday night at Tishomingo to begin second semester action.

Girls

The Lady Wildcats built a double-figure first half lead in the ranked showdown with Weatherford, but had to hold off a frantic charge by the Lady Eagles in the fourth quarter.

Madill was up 11-4 after one period and pushed the advantage to 25-14 at intermission behindeightsecondquarter points from Elexis Holmes.

Weatherford was still down 34-24 going into the final frame but made a game of it down the stretch. Holmes, La’Miyah Brown and Arlette Andrade all chipped in one basket apiece with E’Niyah Holmes canning a pair of crucial free throws to hold on for the victory.

ElexisHolmespumped in 14 points to lead the Lady Wildcat offensive charge as Brown tallied nine, E’Niyah Holmes had six, Andrade and Luci Douglas scored five apiece with Karma Williams chipping in two.

Things were much more relaxed in the rout of Lawton Mac as Madill grabbed an 8-4 edge after the first frame before busting it wide open over the middle two periods. The Lady Wildcats rode a 14-3 scoring flurry in the second stanza and another 17-4 burst in the third quarter that put it out of reach.

Elexis Holmes sank nine of 11 at the charity stripe on the way to a team-high 13 points as sister E’Niyah also tallied double digits with 12.

Brown pitched in eight in the third quarter surge and wrapped up just shy of double figures with nine points. Chloe Miller added five, Williams, Douglas and Ireland Groeber contributed two each and Andrade finished with one point.

Boys

The Wildcats dug an early 23-4 first quarter hole against Lawton Mac and could never recover from the slow start. Jagger Rogers scored all four Madill points in the period.

Madill got things going a little better in the second, posting 15 points, but still trailed 47-19 at intermission. They eventually outscored the Highlanders 12-11 in the fourth stanza.

Rogers pumped in 15 points in leading Madill as Cash Cooper also hit double figures with 10. Ryan Anderson tossed in seven, Uziel Flores and Shawn Taylor notched four apiece, Adrian Gomez scoredthree,Sammy Duran and Jaxon Diaz both ended with two as Gilberto Grimaldo added one.

It was a much closer contest against Western Heights until the final period.

Cooper canned three treys in the first frame to lead the charge as the Wildcats trailed 19-15 through one. Both teams tallied 14 points in the second with Western Heights adding to the lead and a 46-38 edge.

Cooper posted 13 for the game with Anderson just behind with 10 points. Rogers chipped in nine, Duran had seven while Grimaldo and Diaz posted three each.
