Madill’s boys team and Lady Wildcat junior Yadira Barbosa qualified for this weekend’s Class 4A State Cross Country Meet at Edmond Santa Fe with solid regional performances.
The Wildcats claimed third in the regional event held at North Rock Creek High School, finishing only behind conference rival Byng along with Bridge Creek in the team standings to reach the state event for the second year in a row and seventh time in the past 10 seasons. Madill’s girls ended ninth in their division.
Barbosa posted a time of 12minutes,16secondsonthe 3200-meter course to place second individually, just 28 seconds behind the winner from Byng.
AlsofortheLadyWildcats, Kaia Henry checked in 39th at 14:15.03 with Kaitlyn Acquaviva posting a time of 14:22.72 for 43rd place. Yvette Arciaga was 56th in 15:04.66, Klarivel Aldava took 68th at 15:51.74 with Hadon Stuckey rounding out the Madill finishers in 71st with a time of 16:03.93.
Senior James Valadez led the charge for the Madill boys as a medalist in fourth place, clocking in at 16 minutes, 59.89 seconds on the 5000-meter course.
Jose Campos checked in 12th at 17:28.04 with Triston Barnes placing 18th in 17:46.24 and Alex Orta just behind in 21st with a mark of 17:49.76.
The Wildcats also picked up a 35th place showing from Ryder Douglas in 18:33.12, Gael Gallegos was 37th at 18:41.97 and Blane Hawthorne ended 72nd by crossing the line in 20:02.92.
“The boys did really well getting third,” said head coach Cale Eidson. “That’s about where we were seeded going in so we took care of business. All the qualifying guys were on the state team last year so they have that experience and are looking forward to it. James (Valadez) ran very well and I think he has a really good chance to make All State.
“We would have liked to have qualified the girls team as well but are extremely pleased with Yadira qualifying again. She was 10th last year as a sophomore and we are hoping she can go even higher this year. We are familiar with the course for this weekend because that’s where we had the Pre-State Meet a few weeks ago.”
