Marshall County Assessor Kyleigh Wescott said she never thought that she would be in her current role with the county but loves the people she works with and her position. Wescott grew up in Marshall County and graduated from Madill High School in 2009. Her grandparentsusedtoownthe Corner Drug store in town.
“My family's from here, my grandparents used to own the Corner Drug Store for several years so a lot of people are familiar with them,” Wescott said.
After graduating from high school, Wescott joined the Navy and was deployed on the Abraham Lincoln.
“IwasintheNavyforthree years, I was in AVH which is an aircraft Handler,” Wescott said about her Navy career.
During her time in the Navy, Wescott was training to be a nurse and had plans to continue her education after leaving the Navy but found a new path to follow in 2013 when she and her family moved back to Madill. A few months after returning home, she began working at the County Assessor's office, where she was 2nd deputy for seven years.
She was promoted to 1st deputy and was in that position for two years before her predecessor retired. Wescott said she loves her role in the community and does not think of herself as a boss.
She said she knows that a good work/life balance is crucial. Wescott explained why she loves her role and why she made a change in her career.
“I did plan on going back to school of course but then I was a mom I was a young momandIhadtwokidsunder two, and Debbie was wonderful to work for because she would let me be off anytime I needed to for the kids. She she's very family-oriented which is also setting up to be family-oriented as a boss as well.”
Wescott has two children, 10-year-old Aikman and 12-year-oldTrisslyn.Aikman is named for her favorite Dallas Cowboys player and Trisslyn is a name Wescott had loved since before becoming a mom.
Wescott is a single mom who enjoys taking her kids to concerts like Luke Combs andfamilyvacations.Wescott said she knows how lucky her family is to have the support of her children's father, Dylan and his wife Ashley.
Wescott said it is important to have a co-parenting relationship and it only benefi ts the children they share.
“It’s extremely important and again a huge shout out to their stepmom too because she's wonderful,” Wescott said. “When he's [Dylan] working and Trisslyn's got a basketball game in Madill and Aikman's got one in Ardmore she'll get one to whereverwhileIgettheother one because, of course, as a mom you don't want to miss anything but there's times that I can't get to all places.”
When she and her family are not traveling they enjoy all that Lake Texoma has to offer and look forward to future projects like the Hard Rock Resorts at Lake Texoma.
“I make a point anytime I travel to visit the Hard Rocks everywhere I've been, if there's a hard rock, I visited,' Wescott said..' So to think that there's going to be one close is kind of mind blowing to me.”
Wescott said she is thankful for her role as county assessor and the people that she works with.
“I don't really necessarily still view myself as a boss, I still view myself on the same level as them, like I still think that we're a team; I would never think that what I do is more important than them.” Wescott said.
