Redskins capture inaugural indoor state title

The Kingston Redskins claimed the boys Division 3 state championship while the girls took third in the Inaugural Oklahoma High School Indoor Track and Field Championships held recently at the University of Oklahoma.

In the boys’ division, Kingston outdistanced second place Sequoyah Tahlequah and third place Marlow while capturing one individual crown along with a handful of high finishes.

Kingston’s Lady Redskins werethirdbehindStroudand Prague in Division 3 despite placing in just four events.

“We qualified quite a few kids for the state championship from the prelims, which said a lot due to the fact we were in division 3, the largest division in the state,” Kingston coach Jones Jones commented. “We sure are proudoftheseyoungmenand the example they are setting for the younger kids that are going to fill their shoes. Winning a state title is huge, butwinningOklahoma’svery first one ever is something that can never be taken away from them.”

Senior Logan Stephens took home the boys’ individual gold in the 60 meters, sprinting to a winning time of 7.14 seconds. Sophomore Koewyn Young was third at 7.38tograbthebronzemedal.

Stephens also was second for a silver in the 200 meters by clocking in at 23.42 seconds while teammate Kelly Gray ended fifth with a mark of 24.26.

The Redskins’ 4x400 relay unit took the bronze medal as well, taking third in 3 minutes, 42.64 seconds. That group consisted of Stephens, JaydenFraize,KasenBarker and Joaquin Menchaca.

Dominic Sokolnicki added a silver medal in the shot put with a heave of 40 feet, 4 inches with fellow Redskin Clayton Shipp landing in seventh.

Barker, who is just a freshman, provided stellar outings in both the high jump and longjumpevents.Henotched anoutstandingleapof19feet, 9 inches for a fourth-place effort in the long jump and cleared 5 feet, 8 inches to claim fifth in the high jump.

Leading the way individually fortheKingstongirlswas Coby Davis, who snagged the silver medal in the 200 meters with a time of 26.41 seconds and also wrapped up fourth in the 60 meters in 7.97 seconds.

Davis was also a key part of the 4x400 relay foursome, teaming with Vivian Cobbs, Kate Ratzlaff and Kenley Hallum to win the state title in 4:18.50.

Kingston’s 4x800 unit composed of Addi Cole, Layla Thompson, Daisy Avery and Ratzlaff claimed the silver medal with a runner-up time of 10:54.24.
