Kingston FCCLA Students Paint the Capitol in Red Blazers

Students from the Kingston FCCLA chapter participated in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Day at the Capitol. Students from across the state were engaged in a day of learning and advocacy on February 9. While there, students Ava Reno, Allie Hartin, Kinley Reeves and Hannah Riggs were able to meet with legislators, state leaders, and other students from across the state, painting the Capitol in a sea of red blazers.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a student organization open to those who have taken or are currently enrolled in a Family and Consumer Sciences class. Family and Consumer Sciences, formerly known as home economics, teaches students skills for life with options to specialize in one of the career areas of FCS such as; fashion design, interior design, education careers, nutritional sciences, food preparation, hospitality assistant, or human services.

While at FCS Day at the Capitol, students received advocacy training, heard updates from legislative committee chairs on FCSrelated topics, and networked with students from across Oklahoma. Each chapter was assigned legislators from both chambers to meet with and discuss the importance of their FCCLA experiences and FCS courses taken in their public schools. They were able to leave behind a themed cookie made by the students of the Great Plains Technology Center Culinary Arts program in Lawton. FCS Day at the Capitol is hosted by the Oklahoma Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (OATFCS) a division of the Oklahoma Association for Career and Technology Education (OkACTE) a professional organization for all areas of the Oklahoma Career and Technology Education system.

Oklahoma FCCLA serves more than 13,364 members in 400 local chapters in junior and senior high schools and on technology center campuses. Known as the "ultimate leadership experience," FCCLA national programs and chapter activities help members become strong leaders in their families, careers and communities.

FCCLA is one of seven CareerTech student organizations affiliated with CareerTech career areas. The other six are FFA and agricultural education, Business Professionals of America and business and information technology education, HOSA and health careers education, DECA and marketing education, Technology Student Association and technology engineering, and SkillsUSA and trade and industrial education.
