Arrests for murder and solicitation

An Achille man is facing First-DegreeMurdercharges after a shooting in Achille. Colbert Police officers were dispatched to a residence in Achille near South Seventh AvenueandAvenueAshortly after noon on July 18. Once officers arrived on scene, they found James Scoggins, 68, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

After investigating, officers arrested Justin Stone for the shooting. First-Degree Murder carries either the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole. The district attorney will decide if the death penalty will be pursued.

Stone, a 44-year-old male from Achille is being held on a $1 million dollar bond and is due in court on August 13.

A Coal County male is facing charges for allegedly engaging in sexual communication with a minor. Coalgate officers received a call from 'Predator Poacher' Alex Rosan. After receiving the call, Coalgate officers approached twomenconversing on the lawn of the Savanna Gardens. Rosan told the officer that John Spangler was soliciting child pornography.

Officers received permission from Spangler to search his phone. While checking the phone, officers observed communications between Spangler and multiple girls Spanglersaidwereunderage. Officers also noted that Spangler sent explicit photos of himself and photos of sexual nature to the underage girls.

Rosen then gave the officers a detailed log of the conversations between Spangler andRosen,whoSpangler allegedly believed was an eleven-year-old girl. Spangler was arrested and his being held without bond.

Spangler, a 48-year-old male from Shawnee could face 10 years if convicted. An online search found priors for Cruelty to Animals, Possession of CDS, Domestic Abuse/Assault and Battery and Possession of a Firearm After the Formal Conviction of a Felony.
